Not Every Varicocele Requires Surgery
Posted: Jun 24, 2015
Men can have certain health conditions that don’t affect women. There is a condition that affects the scrotum called a varicocele, and sometimes treatment or surgery is necessary to correct the problem.
There are certain health conditions that are specific to men or women. Some conditions are more severe than others and can affect their fertility. Most people tend to think of women when it comes to fertility issues, but there are certain conditions that can cause men problems as well. One condition that can cause men problems is if they have a varicocele.
A varicocele occurs when the veins of the scrotum become enlarged. It is very similar to varicose veins that people get in their legs. A varicocele usually develops over time, but does not always cause problems. Most of them are easy to diagnose and not all of them require treatment. If a varicocele does start to cause symptoms, a man should see his doctor to see if he requires any type of treatment or surgery. Complications from a varicocele can cause scrotal deformity or problems with sperm quality, which an ultimately lead to issues with fertility.
There are a number of men that undergo varicocele treatment without surgery. Since many men never experience symptoms there may not be a need for treatment. In some cases taking a pain reliever such as ibuprofen or wearing an athletic support cup to relieve pressure can help. The only way to know whether or not a varicocele needs surgery or treatment is to have it examined by a physician.
A man does not have to find a specialist in order to have this condition examined. Any general practitioner can diagnose the problem. If surgery is necessary a patient may have to go to an actual surgeon to have the procedure performed. Since many varicoceles don’t require treatment, a person’s regular doctor may not have to do anything but diagnose and manager the problem.
Some men may want to do a bit of research on the condition before they see their doctor. This will not only better inform them about the problem they are having, but it will also help them prepare any questions they may have for their doctor. The better informed a person is the better they can understand what is happening with their body medically. If there are things they still don’t understand their doctor will be more than happy to explain whatever it is they don’t understand.
If a man is not having any symptoms, is not experiencing any discomfort, and is not having any fertility issues he will most likely want to try varicocele treatment without surgery. In many cases no treatment is necessary, but there are non-surgical treatment options available. No one likes to think about having surgery, especially if it is not absolutely necessary. There are certain cases where a doctor may recommend surgery if he feels it is the best option for the patient. When a man goes in for an examination the doctor will explain all of his options and then together they can decide the best course of treatment. The ultimate goal is to do what is best for the patient in the long run.
