Anyone with diabetes knows that careful management of weight and food intake are critical for helping keep glucose levels in tight control. When levels are not well managed, diabetics open themselves up for a host of potential side effects, including circulatory problems, heart disease, blindness and other complications. For diabetics who struggle with their weight, bariatric surgery may provide the help necessary. Researchers are finding, however, that well-followed weight management programs may also provide the same level of assistance as gastric band surgery.

A recently completed clinical trial has essentially shown that both paths for weight management have produced similar improvements for diabetics in enabling them to better control their blood sugar levels. To reach their findings, researchers enlisted 45 volunteers with long-duration type 2 diabetes and BMIs of 30 or higher. The participants were broken into two groups – one that received the gastric band procedure and the other that underwent intensive weight management programming.

At the conclusion of the one-year study, the two groups both had similar A1C levels. The number drop was 1.2 for patients with the gastric band and 1.0 for those who entered the weight management program. Researchers did note that band patients dropped more weight at the three-month mark, but those in the management program had better results in regard to blood pressure.

Diabetics who are obese open themselves up for a host of potential life-limiting complications. By taking steps to reduce weight, it is possible for type 2 diabetics to reduce health risks while improving their overall health status. Both weight management programs and weight loss surgery can deliver the desired results, but patients need to understand they each come with their own share of commitments. There is no "easy" way to manage weight or diabetes.

To learn more about the benefits of weight loss for diabetics, speak with a licensed healthcare provider. A skilled bariatric surgeon can provide insights about the possibility of bariatric surgery.
