Manage your cholesterol problem with herbal medicine

Excessive levels of cholesterol pose harmful effects upon one’s body. Those suffering from this ailment usually take the traditional medicines few of which often result in side effects. That’s where the herbal treatments are preferred as the related medicines are prepared with organic herbal components that are free from harmful elements.

Following ayurvedic medicines for cholesterol are suggested for lowering cholesterol:

a. Niacin – Available in meats, multivitamins, dairy products, eggs and fish etc; Niacin is able to improve the good high-density lipoprotein, i.e. HDL. Doctor must be consulted for taking Niacin in high doses as it may pose side effects like ulcers or liver problems. Anyway, it is beneficial for the persons suffering from high cholesterol and acts like a strong herbal medicine.

b. Plant Sterols and Stanols (Phytosterols) – Plant sterols or phytochemicals found mostly in the plants and certain fruits help in reducing cholesterol levels to great extent. Those taking orange juice or margarine are able to take these substances contained in them. Likewise use of vegetables, legumes, seeds and nuts etc also helps in reducing the cholesterol levels in a big way. Regular intake of approx 2 grams of sterols on daily basis is advantageous in lowering LDL by about fourteen percent in few people.

c. Red Yeast Rice – Likewise LDL, fatty acids and blood lipids can be lowered in considerable manners with red yeast rice that contains monacolins. These elements help in conflicting with formation of cholesterol. Lovastatin, a particular type of monoclins is used as an effective ingredient in certain drugs used for managing cholesterol levels. Thus Red Yeast Rice is considered as one of the best herbal medicines for this ailment.

d. Omega-3 Fatty Acids – Accumulation of plaque in the arteries can be diffused with these acids known as fish oil. Enhanced triglycerides can be checked with high doses of omega-e fatty acids. But one should avoid its use while taking any blood-thinning medicines. Doctor must be consulted by such patients.

The following steps can also go a long way and prove as worthy medicines in reducing enhanced cholesterol:

a. LDL levels can be lowered greatly with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Using certain oils including the ones derived from olive, peanut, grape seeds, olive, sunflower, safflower or canola works wonders as they contain such advantageous acids. Likewise avocados, seeds, fish including tuna, mackerel, herring or trout are also rich with the same. Soybeans and nuts should also be taken in regular manners to say NO to enhanced LDL.

b. Scads of ingredients found in vegetables and fruits help in lowering cholesterol in a big way. Contents of fiber and cholesterol-blocking molecules known as sterols and eye-appealing pigments are available in green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. Likewise yellow squashes, tomatoes, carrots, plums, strawberries and blueberries also go a long way in reducing cholesterol.

Persons affected with higher levels of cholesterol should get involved in physical work, exercises, long walks and yoga etc. Abstinence from alcohol and tobacco & junk foods is advised for them. Simple foods and meditation are also good.
