Where and when is this year's Mobile Fashion Week
Posted: Jun 27, 2015
The folks behind Mobile Fashion Week just announced that this year's annual showcase of southern style will take place from Thursday, Sept. 24 through Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Warehouse District at the Mobile Aeroplex.
"Mobile Aeroplex is just the right partner for our five year anniversary," said MFW founder Richard McGill Hamilton.
McGill Hamilton said MFW attendance has nearly quadrupled since the event's 2011 debut, and a bigger space was essential.
The Aeroplex, which has become an exciting venue for events like last March's Aerofest, has the room, the buzz and the gritty feel that provides such a cool contrast to the fashions filling the catwalk.
"It's definitely an industrial look. It's going to be awesome," said MFW public relations and marketing director Lindsay Wilson. "It's a great collaboration."
In past years, MFW has used locations like the garage of Red Square advertising agency and the basement of Hargrove Engineers to get that funky warehouse charm.
The fifth annual MFW will get the glam going on Thursday, Sept. 24 with an outrageous, head-turning hair show featuring over-the-top styles designed by professionals from local salons.
The chic week will continue on Friday, Sept. 25 with the popular "Fashion's Night Out" and the grand MFW finale will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Doors will open each night at 6 p.m., shows will start at 7, and everything will wrap up at 10 p.m.
On each night, attendees will have the opportunity to browse and buy clothes and accessories at pop-up shops and fill up on tasty treats from local food trucks.
The event will also continue to promote "Fashion With a Cause" by highlighting and contributing to charities including human trafficking awareness nonprofit Eye Heart World, Camp Rap-A-Hope, which provides summer camps for kids with cancer, and Children With Hair Loss, which donates wigs to kids with conditions causing them to lose their hair.
This year's MFW pretty much follows the template of all the previous ones, but there is a fresh fashion twist.
For the first time, collections from area high school students will be shown. Three talented young designers who applied for the new Junior Design Sponsorship will watch their own designs rock the runway.
The work of Vigor High School's Santajia Lindsey will hit the catwalk at Thursday's hair show, Arianna Swan of Spanish Fort High School will present her designs on Friday, and Helen Legg of Fairhope High School, will display her collection at Saturday's finale.
