DIY Gift Ideas When You are Broke
Posted: Jul 01, 2015
DIY gifts are not just for times when you are broke. They also make great presents for someone who has everything or someone who is hard to please with market-bought stuff because a handmade gift exceeds its commercial value well without the amount of time and effort you spend for someone. Read on for some simple yet cool gifts that you can make yourself.
Well, let’s accept it. Every once in a while a birthday, graduation, or anniversary pops up when your bank account is seeing the last remains of your previous month’s salary trickle by. At this time, the worst thing you would want to spend on is something you would eventually have to give away. But that doesn’t mean your friends and family have to suffer with opening bright packets just to reveal a box of cheap tissues or a cup full of candy.
Here are some do-it-yourself gift ideas that are as simple as they are charming. They don’t take a lot of time and for most of them, you can use things commonly found around the house. Take a look.
1. Tissue holder: We asked not to gift cheap tissue paper boxes, but how about a crafted tissue holder that can be used to hold tissues for a long, long time and be a décor piece as well? Find directions here and here.
- Goodie pouch: Are you a sewing pro? Here’s what you can do. Follow the article here to make a goodie bag. You can then fill it with little knick-knacks like nail paints, decorative bobby pins etc., or you can put in stuff that the person can use for their hobby. For example, if he or she loves painting, fill the bag with color bottles they can use.
- Photo frame: Photo frames can never go out of fashion. Here are some great tutorials you can take inspiration from. Don’t forget to add a memorable picture of the concerned person.
- Fun book marks: You can make fun bookmarks with just a strip of paper, a pair of scissors and some sketch-pens. All you need to do is cut the paper into a rectangular shape, make a drawing if you are good at it or just write one of your favorite quotes, and get it laminated so that it stays good for long. That said, there are thousands of ideas you can find online to make adorable book marks.
- Rope vase: Take a bottle and a long piece of rope/twine. Secure one end of the rope along the bottom of the bottle with glue and start winding the rope around it upwards. To keep the rope from wounding open, keep gluing it with the surface of the bottle at intervals. Keep repeating the pattern until you have reached the top and secured the end properly in sync with the bottle’s neck. Your rope vase is ready.
So here were some cool (and so little time-consuming!) ideas that you can use to make great gifts for your loved ones. We are sure that they will be happy to receive something that clearly shows your effort and thoughts for them. And for you, well, you will be making someone happy without breaking your own bank. What can be better than that?
