Royal fashion

The world’s media converged on Kate Middleton as she shined in a cream knee-length Alexander McQueen coat during the christening of her daughter Charlotte after arriving at St Mary Magdalene Church on the Queen’s Sandringham Estate this week.

She smiled for the crowds while pushing along the classic Millson pram where the baby was resting on her big day.

And just when a curious Prince George, in bright red shorts and embroidered shirt by Rachel Riley, reached out and touched the pram’s wheel a pure white glove shooed him away.

The trusted hand was from Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo who stuck out like fashion’s sore thumb, propelling the christening back to the Edwardian period in a beige uniform from 1892 designed by the Norland College for nanny training.

The traditional attire includes a dress tailored to reach well below the knee, a brown felt hat, a brown bow tie as well as the white gloves.

The Spanish-born nanny is the plus-one at many Royal events which include the children and while the other members of the Windsor family move with the fashions her uniform stays the same.

The school, in Bath, England, has a global reputation as being the most prestigious institution for nannies.

Graduating with a Norland Diploma involves training for two years and then working for 12 months as a nanny in Britain. The skills include the regular duties of a nanny plus taekwondo, evasive driving with children on board and the challenge of children and young people being exposed to social media.

However her training does not include smacking.

Ms Borrallo was on hand to hold a kangaroo-style backpack for the Duchess, who was wearing canary yellow dress, at Sydney Airport during the three-week Royal visit on April 16, 2014.

She also lifted Prince George up to the window of Buckingham Palace so he could see the festivities outside for a Trooping the Colour parade on June 13 this year.

Miss Pepper Australia Nanny School on the Gold Coast has a tie with Norland College where some of their students spend three weeks in Bath as part of their diploma.

"We send over about 15 of our students at a time, between 60 and 100 a year," Miss Pepper Australia Nanny School team member Marcus Xavier said.

"Norland nannies do look after the royal family.

"They are high-quality nannies and also nannies with an ethical approach."

But as far as the taekwondo and evasive driving skills go, Mr Xavier jokingly said, "we teach them jujitsu", before saying, "there may be families that require those skills".

Community Training Australia (CTA) Director Toni Mehigan runs the Miss Pepper school and said having some of the Norland College traditions rub off on Australian nannies is important for their education.

"We are really keen for our students to get the best of what is happening in the world and it is a return to some of the stuff we had in the 1950s and 1960s," she said.

Graduates from Norland College receive a BA (Hons) in Early Years Development and Learning with the Norland Diploma.
