Different Aspects Of Glass Pool Fencing Gold Coast
Posted: Jul 11, 2015
Introduction
Gone are the days when people used to go to clubs for swimming. Now people have swimming pools in the backyard of their homes. It is observed that many a times unknowingly, young children aged less than five years, elderly people and pets have drowned in these swimming pools. To avoid such accidents, Australian safety standards have recommended covering these pools with fence. These fences act like passive barriers and prevent children climbing or going across them. It is the reason why safety standards have set a minimum height of these fences as 1.2 m. Many a companies have come up in the Gold Coast which provides services of erecting fences around pools.
Types
Based on the type of fence material being used, pool fencing can be broadly classified into glass and aluminum rail fencing. The glass fencing can be further sub classified into frameless and semi-frameless pool fencing. The main advantage of glass fencing is that it is transparent. People in houses can have a watch on the activities in the pool. Similarly people in the pool will have a natural sense of openness and they are not constrained by the barricade closures. Initially, it looks shaky to believe that glass will increase safety rather than become a safety hazard itself. It is observed that a good quality toughened glass can be as strong as steel or concrete. On the other hand, a defective glass with large impurities will break with a simple knock of a hammer. There is a stringent standard set by the Australian government on the quality of the glass.
As the name suggests, frameless glass fencing does not have frames that run across the width but are simply supported on steel grooves. The glass in frameless glass fencing is thicker as it has to take the full load when a person is bending or leaning against it. Glass panels of at least 12 mm thick are recommended by the Australian safety standards. The first step in the installation of frameless fencing is to get the layout of the area around the pool. A rough estimate of fence length is then calculated. The procedure at site starts with marking of areas which need to be drilled for placing steel grooves.
The steel groove has two parts, the solid shaft part which is buried inside the earth and the groove part which remains outside. Once holes are drilled to standard sizes, the solid shaft part of the steel groove is buried inside it. The steel groove can be either glued inside the hole or can be clamped down with bolts. The later technique provides more strength to the structure. The upper portion of the hole is covered with a steel plate to give an elegant shape. Subsequently, glass panels are placed inside the steel grove. Since glass panels come in standard sizes, length of the fence can be increased by joining the glass panels together with hinges and latches.
In semi-frameless glass fencing, intermediate support to glass panel is provided by aluminum posts which come in square or round shape. In this type of glass pool fencing, hinges and latches are not required and aluminum posts are erected at locations of glass joining. Since, aluminum posts provide additional support to the whole structure, glass thickness can be reduced to 10 mm.
Conclusions
Different aspects of frameless and semi frameless glass fencing is discussed that clearly highlights merits and demerits of each of the techniques.
