Scope of LED Lights
Posted: Jul 14, 2015
LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes, bulbs have transfigured the concept of energy efficient lighting in the world. According to a survey, more than 25% of total domestic electricity consumption is done by light bulbs that we use in our houses. LED lights are two-lead semiconductor light source that emits light directionally, opposed to the traditionally used bulbs that spread light spherically. LEDs have always been considered as expensive which has been a major roadblock for the LED Lights Manufacturers for their extensive use.
LED Lights are gaining popularity now as the price of LEDs is going down with the improving technology. Powered LED Lights are considered safe to be used under all conditions as they don’t contain toxic metals like mercury, as opposed to the popularly used Fluorescent tubes
Advantages Of LED Lights
Apart from being highly energy efficient LEDs are becoming popular day by day as they offer following benefits to their users
- Less Fragile - LEDs do not have a filament hence they are not damaged under conditions where a regular incandescent bulb would have been broken to pieces.
- Long Life- It is seen that LEDs last 10 times longer than regular incandescent bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
- Efficiency- LEDs emits more lumens per watt compared to regular light bulbs and use only 2-17 watts of energy which is 0.33% to 0.033% of the light used by regular incandescent bulbs.
- Mercury Free And Cool Light- LEDs are mercury free and emit less heat in the form of IR which causes harm to certain sensitive objects and fabrics
- Slow Failure- LED Lights faint slowly over time which saves the problem of an abrupt blackout caused by the regular incandescent bulbs.
Applications Of LED Lights
The first LEDs were used as a replacement for small incandescent bulbs and were of very low intensity and wavelength, restricted to the color red. But, now LEDs are available with high brightness levels and across visible, infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths, which have made their place in the market strong and have increased their usage over time. The scope of their application is increasing over time. In modern times LEDs are used as –
- Traffic Signals and Indicators- LED Lights are used as traffic signals due to their small size, low energy consumption and long life. Large area LEDs are used in stadiums and as fancy decorative display lights. In today’s time Solar Street Lights make use of LEDs to keep a check on their power consumption.
- Lighting and Illumination- As LEDs are gaining popularity, traditionally used incandescent bulbs are now being replaced with LEDs. Because of their long life LEDs are being used as Street Lights and Automotive lighting in cars and bicycles.
- Data Communication- Nowadays, many theaters make use of infrared LEDs to transmit sound to the listener’s receivers. Also, Light Emitting Diode is used to send data over various types of fiber optic cables.
- Sustainable Lighting- Outdoor LED Lights are used in architectural lighting. A 6 watt LED emits light equivalent to a 40 watt incandescent bulb; also the life span of a 6 watt LED is 5 times more than that of a regular 40 watt incandescent bulb.
LEDs offer better cost saving as compared to any other bulb present today in the market. Apart from saving costs, using LEDs will make environment mercury free and reduce power consumption on a large scale The speedy development in technology has welcomed a wide range of better and new LED Bulbs in the market which are more energy saving, long lasting and safer to use.
