Posted: Jul 15, 2015

Even enterprises need big data and analytics to fuel their business processes and increase their performance.
The advent of Internet of Things (IoT) fired the growth of mobile application development. IoT is growing exponentially with sensors attached in every device from wristbands and cars to geo-location systems and street corners, contributing to more data than any other source. This data can be used to develop applications like Waze. The genius of the app is its ability to take data from external or third party environment and update users of meaningful data points and gather data from them. Waze uses this information to turn all smart devices running its program into sensors, which upload data continuously like location and speed to company’s servers. Comments from users are also critical as Waze uses this information to warn users where police are or where an accident took place. Waze uploads all this information into a server, which then analyzes it and returns it to users in the form of useful intelligence that can be used to take informed driving decisions. This was impossible before Business Intelligence or Data Analytics.

Thus, Business Intelligence with the assistance of mobile apps grants the means for communications across processes. This helps both internal stakeholders like CFO or a business line managers to calculate the cost of carry and external stakeholders like the owner of the ship, who might be waiting for shipments, to have insight into current conditions and to update him about delivery times.
