If you have been to a hospital, then you might be aware of the term OR. It is simply an abbreviation of the operating room. It is the critical care area and a much regulated place bound with abundance of rules. To safely function in this area, it is must for the doctors, surgeons, nurses or anyone to follow the rules.

All the operating rooms have an in charge called the circulator or circulator nurse. The circulator is responsible for everything going on in OR. You need anything; he will get it for you. In this way, following a set of protocols, he has to supervise the room.

In case of surgery, a scrub tech or scrub nurse replaces the circulator. Dressed in a hospital gown and wearing gloves in hands, organizes the surgical instruments, pass them to the surgeon and sometimes also assist in surgery.

The operating room is full of rules and some of them are like

  • Don't touch the stand.
  • Keep the Mayo stand sterile.
  • Put on a clean scrub suit, surgical cap, and surgical mask whenever you enter into the operating room.
  • Don't just touch anything in the OR.
  • If you are allowed in the OR due to some education reason, then make sure that you keep your lips clasped.
  • Never enter the OR if you are subjected to any disease. You can infect its environment and can create problems.
  • Always be scrubbed-in, if you are touching anything in the room.

The reason for these rules is that it is the vary place where operations are performed and is very prone of getting infected. The general safety of patients is of utmost importance, therefore this room has a supervisor who keeps a check on everything, a patient requires. The room seeks silence; therefore, the people working here have no time for any outsider in life.

The room being the most sterile and highly supervised room in the hospital, is also place of unspoken stories of win over the death. You might have heard cases where a surgeon got married to an anesthesiologist, a circulator and a residential dating, and the surgical technicians getting married. The operating room has put the syringe of love in so many workers here. So, if you have worked previously in the operating room and have a story, then you can post it on the website www.surgicalsojourner.comand share it with the world. This website is the platform to bring those stories back to life and reveal the joyful face behind the sterile zone.
