Art in Vietnam

Almost every country has their rich history preserved in the form of art and craft in museums, workshops and archives. These reservations are usually done to bring the history of a country to live, literary. Art is used to express feelings and ideas of people using imaginations, especially in paintings. In Vietnam, there is a variety of galleries and art manufacturing workshops. Some are in Hoi and others in Ho Chi Minh City as mentioned below.

Hoi is an ancient Vietnam city and also serves as a United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization heritage site. It has a sizeable and growing tourism industry due to the presence of beautiful traditional architectures. Although the contemporary art scene in Hoi An has not much developed as the art scene in other larger cities, there are some art workshops and galleries that sell and exhibit original artwork. Below is a preview of some of the curated selection.

Hoi an Art and Craft Manufacturing Workshop

This workshop is housed in a traditional 200-year-old Chinese trading house. Traditional Vietnamese handicrafts are created by on-site artisans, such as fabric weaving, embroidery, silk and paper lanterns, and terracotta pottery. There are guides in the workshop that give insight and explain the history of the crafts and the techniques applied by the artisans. To cater to both the international and local tourists in Hoi an, the Workshop stresses the traditional culture of Vietnamese and has performance shows on a daily basis. The performances include music, dances, theater and song.

Hoi an Art Café

Founded in 2005, the Hoi an Art Café is the home to a wide range of sculpture gallery from Eric Kappeler, who is a Swiss-born sculptor. Surrounded with art, the gallery offers peaceful and beautiful surroundings where you can enjoy your coffee while working. The Swiss-born sculptor went to St Galen Design School in Switzerland and created a variety of sculptors for different institutions in the west.

In Hoi an, the sculptor creates sculptures in bronze and marble and produces outdoors and home artworks. The sculptures, from small to large scale, are exhibited in the colonial villa and the garden. Kappeler, the sculptor, creates sculptures that have limited editions.

San Art in Ho Chi Minh City

The San Art is an initiative that is artist-led and endeavors to create opportunities for discourse, education and creative experimentation around cultural practices. In Vietnamese the term ‘San’ means ‘platform’. San Art creates a meeting platform for both local and international artists. San Art manages and initiated the ‘San Art Laboratory’ which is a residency program for the country’s ongoing artist. It also locates resources on behalf of the ambitious artistic projects that are derailed by lack of funds.

Saigon shopping places

Vietnam is a country with incredible landscapes, years of history and extremely attractive tourists. However, as a tourist, you cannot leave Ho Chi Minh City without having a chance to shop in Saigon.
