Designed to improve communication, productivity and develop new ideas, the modern open office has done more harm than good. The general thought behind this trend is that employees will be happier if they are not separated by thick walls, although a lot of research states otherwise. After several decades of research on office spaces it has been concluded that open-plans are linked to increased employee stress, bad relations with co-workers and lower satisfaction with the office environment. There are many other drawbacks of an open office space, read on to find out.

The leading complaint of most open office employees is noise, discussions, ringing phones, pinging e-mail etc. It is easy to lose focus because of these distracting, unavoidable noises. It is often noticed that most of these employees try to deal with this problem by using their headphones. But continuous use of headphones will only prove to be harmful. Lack of privacy is another issue faced by most employees. Designers and managers of open office space wish to promote casual conversation and a setting that will make co-workers accessible to each other in times of need. Sadly, this has deprived them of private space to talk as well as being productive.

An affordable and simple solution for this problem is using office partitions as most employees work better when there are no roving eyes looking over them while working. They are helpful to employees, employers and the workplace as a whole. Some of the basic types of office partitions found in the workplace are cubicles, floor-to-ceiling, glass, accordion and portable. Apart from offering privacy, promoting concentration, reducing noise and distraction there are a number of ways an office with partitions is better than an open office space.

Various departments in the workplace can be separated individually, allowing visitors to easily find their way around without disturbing all the employees of that floor. Modern office partitions are designed to control internal and external noise, ensuring the employee does not get disturbed or loses focus. Employees will feel more comfortable in a closed office environment. Instead of using expensive and time consuming permanent walls, partitions are easier to install and create. While moving your office to another location these partitions are easy to remove and reinstall quite easily.
