The following tips can help you plan what may become one of the best parties you’ve ever hosted.

Open Your House for a Tour

Of course, your guests will want to see every inch of your home during a housewarming party. Be prepared to show off your decorating style as well as every room – you may even have to give the tour several times as new guests arrive. You can also designate this job to an older child if you need time to get away to oversee the food or entertainment. Remember to tell any funny anecdotes or special stories about the planning and building of your house.

Food Ideas

A housewarming party is a great reason to host a potluck. This way, you can save on costs while your guests bring their favorite dishes to share. A nice gesture is to let guests know you are providing the meat and drinks, and they can bring a side dish or dessert. A party in warm weather can be an excuse to fire up the grill for burgers, hot dogs and steaks. If your event is during the winter, it could be fun to provide a variety of stews in slow cookers for a hearty, yet simple meal.

Entertainment

Parties are made all the more memorable if you have a little fun. For the younger crowd, set up some backyard sprinkler toys or open the swimming pool if you have one (with adult supervision). At night or in cold weather, you can set up a room with video game systems and board games. Look up party games that all your guests can enjoy and wrap up a few nice prizes.

Take the Party Outside

Hopefully, your backyard area is set up to entertain guests. It’s a great idea to string the trees or porch railings with tiny lights or hang up party lanterns. Provide plenty of patio furniture or get ahold of some folding chairs so everyone has a place to sit. Be sure to include some citronella candles if you’re holding the party in the evening to keep mosquitos at bay. Have some lively music playing in the background, but not so loudly that your guests can’t hear each other talk. By opening your back doors to include your garden in your housewarming, you make your entire property seem friendly and welcoming.

A housewarming party is a great way to move into your new home and make friends with the neighbors. Plan for an event that is more than just showing guests around, and your party is sure to be remembered.
