Hello folks,Here’s another informative article for understanding food substances. In our last article we understood 6 types of food substances and how we can balance our internal systems through foods we eat. Here are next seven food types for understanding food substances in our daily lives.

Sthir (Strengthening foods)Sthir dravya (strengthening foods) focus on providing strength and nutrition to body organs. These largely concentrate on bones, joint bones, muscles etc. Longer the consumption better body strength- this applies to such food substances. Sthir dravya also helps balance iron levels in our systems. People with ideal and stable iron levels live longer as well as healthier.Example: almonds, wheat.

Sar (quickly spreading)Opposite to sthri dravya, sar foods spread fast. People who seek to revitalize multiple organs instantly should opt for sar dravya. For example, triphala churna spreads quickly through our body organs and cleanses colon, enhances eyesight, cures mouth ulcers etc. Such foods also ensure better movements in small intestine that helps excretory functionsExample: milk, triphala.

Mand (Slow performing foods)Mand dravya are extremely beneficial but perform slowly. These control pitta dosha but accelerate kapha dosha. Such food substances provide long-term stability to joint bones, skin structure, body sculpting etc.Example: ghee, butter.

Tikshna (Eroding foods)Tikshna foods erode and throw out harmful elements in body systems. Infections that cause chronic diseases, body toxins etc. can be well-taken care of by such foods. These control vaat and kapha dosha but increase pitta dosha. However, eroding food substances should be taken cautiously. Mrudu (Softening foods)Blood, flesh and internal organs are meant to be soft. Soft foods substances control vaat dosha by managing fluidity. They provide flexibility of spine and enough lubrication to joint bones. Adopting mrudu food substances in diet help prevent health problems like paralysis.Example: Shatawari, licorice.

Kathin (Hard food substances)As opposed to mrudu dravya, kathin dravya provide stability to certain body elements. Hard food substances are rich in fiber. Hence, they are equally important. Fibrous foods help feel sumptuous and yet provides collagen to skin and ligaments.Example: Betel nut.

Vishad (Impurity terminating foods)Vishad dravya eliminates excessive impurities. Almost every diseases or health condition is caused by "ashuddhi" (impurities). One can stay healthy if such impurities are terminated before they cause any harm. Purifying foods help our systems stay clean and healthy.Example: Honey, shikekai, neem.
