The most important things that google seek among job aspirants
Posted: Jul 29, 2015
We all know the fact that Google is one of the toughest nuts to crack, when it comes to getting a job. The software giant is well known for the way it treats its employees, called the Googlers. Take any standard and Google will definitely rank among the top three companies in the world in terms of employee satisfaction.
Before we discuss the most important traits of aspiring Googlers, it is appropriate to know the kind of life one shall lead if he manages to crack a Google selection procedure. Google pays out heavily in terms of cash component and stocks reserved for the employees. Besides, it has some of the coolest offices and campuses in this world, where you shall be surrounded with the most advanced technologies of the world and some of the smartest brains also. Also, Google is famous for its multi-cuisine canteens where food is served entirely free of cost, no matter what you eat and how many times you eat in a day. You also get to bring your pet at work, drop your laundry when you come to work and avail company cars for roaming in the cities or within the sprawling campuses. These are only some of the benefits, and listing all will probably take much more than just this short article.
Now, coming to the topic of this article, it should be clear to everyone that the views expressed here are that of my own and not an official statement from Google or anyone associated with it. The traits, which I think makes somebody worthy of being a Googler, stems from my perceptions and experiences gathered over all these years as a software professional and IT consultant, the expertise of strategic business consulting being also something that looks good on my CV. Also, let us be very clear about this – the qualities I speak of in this article are applicable only for the engineering and research roles in Google, and have little or no relevance for aspirants specialized in other disciplines like finance, public relations, etc.
For an engineering role at Google, a candidate should be extremely (and by that, I really mean extremely) good at mathematics and science. This is the basic criteria, without which it is impossible to crack a Google selection process. Excellent grades and top colleges, along with recommendations and joint research publications with reputed professors will certainly help to get you shortlisted for an interview. So if you want to be a Googler, you have to become an outstanding student right from your high school days, and you must have a very strong foundation of pre-college mathematics. International Mathematics Olympiads and Putnam Competitions are something you can aim for, if you want to maximize your chances. Strong problem solving skills, creative approaches, and endless curiosity are something that can help you in becoming a Googler. Technically speaking, sharpen your skills at linear algebra, because it will help you to grab the concepts of advanced programming and computer science.
Speaking of programming, you have to be far better from an average Silicon Valley programmer to crack Google interview. These interviews will judge your ability to conceptualize abstracts and prepare algorithms before actually writing down the codes. Such an approach is taken to judge whether you are a material good enough to make improvements in the search algorithms of Google, or at least understand them fully so that you can write the necessary codes. You must be fully competent in at least two useful and contemporary programming languages and aware about what is going on in Google, so that you can fine tune and channelize your efforts.
Lastly, master the fundamentals of machine learning, robotics and advanced statistics. Expand your knowledge on artificial intelligence. Google simply loves robots and artificial intelligence. Also, it is their job to provide common people the vast knowledge available on the internet in the most relevant manner.
Try to understand the business model and approach of Google towards real life problems. After all, you should not dream of getting a job at Google if you are a geek but have no idea about how Google make money or predict the spread of Ebola in a much faster manner than the US Government, United Nations and World Health Organization!
