Foam is essentially a material that is formed when gases get trapped inside liquid or solid. These gases form pockets inside the parent material and alter their properties. Foam can be broadly classified into two types; open cell and closed cell. In open cell, the gas pockets are connected to each other while in closed cell the gas pockets are necessarily independent and form discrete pockets.

From the view point of industrial application, closed cell foams are more suitable as they offer more versatile range of properties required in the industries. Foam can be further classified on the basis of the type of material it is made up of. These are polyethylene foam, polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam etc. Out of these the most commonly used closed cell foam is closed cell polyethylene foam.

Polyethylene and EVA (Ethylene-vinyl acetate) Foam are almost similar with Polyethylene being firmer and more resistant to heat and less costly that EV. It offers better compression set. PE Foam is stocked in a range of densities from 30 to 250 kg/m3 and in a variety of different colours. Polyethylene Foam is made in a mould, which results in a sheet of foam known as a bun. The maximum length, width and thickness of the bun varies and is dependent upon the foam's density.

PE foam bun can be cut bun into sheets of the required thickness or can be fabricated into shapes of different kind, piece or profile. Out of many applications where closed cell PE foam a have been found to be useful some are; They are used as shock absorbing material in industry where they are used to absorb different harmful vibrations and impact collisions that might harm the machinery.

They are used to shield items against degradation by weather and chemicals, this includes splash resistance and to oils and fuels. Protection against degradations due to large variations in temperature is yet another popular application of foam. Due to its wide range of desirable properties and applications, foam is a popular choice in the industry today and continues to be so. Its available in wide range.
