With prostate cancer the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in American men getting an edge against the disease is a priority for many. Men who want to increase their chances of avoiding this disease will find certain foods can help.

While a good diet alone isn’t a guarantee that prostate cancer won’t be a problem for some men, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Here are just a few of the "super foods" that do super well at lowering prostate cancer risks:

  • Tomatoes – The lycopene in tomatoes adds the red color, but studies have shown it also reduces prostate cancer risks. Believe it or not, many say cooked tomato products, such as tomato sauce and juice offer more protection, too.
  • Fish – The omega-3 fats found in fish are excellent for boosting heart and brain health. They have also been found to help lower prostate cancer risk courtesy of their anti-inflammatory properties. It’s recommended to eat fish that are "fatty," such as tuna and salmon at least two times a week.
  • Green tea and coffee – The antioxidants found in these caffeinated beverages have been linked to reducing cancer risk. Keep in mind it’s important to drink the caffeinated versions to enjoy the greatest benefits.
  • Veggies – Certain vegetables, such as Brussel sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli are not only good for the body as a whole, but for lowering cancer risks. Work these vegetable into the daily routine raw, steamed or grilled.
  • Nuts – Certain nuts have been linked through studies to a decreased risk of death from many forms of cancer. Walnuts seem to have especially powerful antioxidants that can help ward off prostate cancer risks.

In general, men who want to lower risks for a host of diseases, including prostate cancer, will find that eating a healthy, balanced diet is the best. It’s wise to avoid high-fat, high-calorie, processed foods when possible and to work lots of fruits and vegetables into the routine. Low-fat dairy, lean meats and whole grains are also recommended.

Men who are concerned about prostate cancer are urged to discuss the topic with their healthcare providers. Doctors can help their patients access their risks and take appropriate measures to lower them. In addition, they can offer advice on when and if routine screening should take place to ensure if cancer occurs it is detected as early as possible. Early detection of prostate cancer can greatly increase survival chances while also helping keep treatment options open.
