CCTV drain surveys

The purpose of a CCTV drain survey is to establish the condition of the pipe work. A CCTV drain survey is carried out using specialist state-of-the-art camera equipment specifically designed to travel through below ground pipe work in order to establish the condition of the drainage system. The camera is placed into the drainage system at access points such as manholes, gullies and rod ding eyes and the camera will be pushed slowly through the pipe. The footage is recorded so that it may be analyzed to enable a condition report to be compiled.

A drainage system which flows as it has been designed to critical to the running of most businesses. A blocked rainwater or surface water system can result in flooding during times of rainfall. A blocked foul system can result in the loss of use of facilities on a site as well as flooding. Either of these scenarios can at the very least cause disruption to a business and in some instances prove to be extremely costly.

Apart from the usual drain blockages found during CCTV drain surveys, caused by rocks, mud, sand, garden matter and tree roots which find their way into the drains through breaks, cracks, joins and uncapped pipe ends. There is the general build up of grime, food residue and hair.

On a larger scale, some of the stranger items we have discovered during CCTV drain surveys, include: bottles/rubbish, carpet, a mangled push bike and a fire extinguisher, all of which could have been better disposed of in a bin or at the dump. And then there CCTV drain surveys always surprise the usual drain dwellers, frogs, toads, insects and 100’s of cockroaches running and hopping around below. But, we have also encountered a few, not so common critters, like possums and lizards, even a cat, the other day I opened a manhole, and who should be looking back at me but a little black cat.

CCTV drain surveys not only allow us to report on the condition of your drains and sewers, but as an added bonus we can take a closer look at what lies beneath. CCTV drainage cameras are often mounted in a way that allows them to swivel on all three axis. The most advanced systems also have a rear pointed camera to facilitate reversing. Some systems use remotely operated cars, while others use the traditional pushrod system, not unlike those that doctors use for an endoscopy. The cameras used are chosen for their ability to provide clear images in low or no light environments, and they are water sealed up to IP67 in respect to the locations they are required to operate in. This allows for use in virtually any conditions.
