Evolution of vision correction

The first eye glasses belong to 14th century and that is the exact point, where the people has begun to concern for correcting their vision. Contact lens took a long time to show up and it was reported that the first contact lens was showed up on 1888. Refractory Keratotomy (RK) was the first surgical procedure intended to correct the vision and it had lot of side effects due to its rough approach in correcting the vision. RK used incision to flatten the surface of the cornea.

LASER, one of the important inventions of the mankind, has begun to correct the vision from as early as 1970. Eximer LASER, a special type of LASER characterized by its high precision. Photorefractory Keratotomy (PRK) is the first surgical method to use Eximer LASER for the correction of vision. Although PRK has been used since 1980’s, it was approved by FDA only in 1995. Technically, PRK is pretty simpler than LASIK, as it does not deal with the creation of FLAP on cornea and the main disadvantage of the PRK is prolonged recovery time.

Emergence of LASIK

LASIK is developed in 1999 and approved by FDA in 2002. LASIK is a type of LASER eye correction surgery and it is the most opted surgical procedure for the correcting the visual problem, as of today. It has faster recovery time and lesser side effects than PRK. LASIK surgery are more accurate in correcting vision than other refractive surgeries, as the EXIMER laser is pre-programmed with the cornea map of the patient.

Eye recovers vision from the few hours of the surgery. However, it has to done by the more competent eye surgeon, as the flap creation and repositioning of flap is complex. The flap in the LASIK can be created by microkeratome or femtosecond LASER. LASIK surgery done by the microkeratome is conventional LASIK surgery and it is accompanied by mild to moderate pain while LASIK surgery done by the femtosecond LASER is more safer, more effective and less painful and hence it is also known as blade less LASIK. Wave front guided LASIK is used for producing more precise result than that of conventional Eximer LASER.

With the advance in the technology, more and more people are eligible to take the LASIK surgery. LASIK surgery can also been done in people with very high visual power and relatively thin cornea.

Alternative to LASIK: A short introduction to other viable refractory surgery

LASEK and epi-LASIK are advanced versions of PRK surgical procedure and hence, are more effective than PRK. If one is not eligible for LASIK, these two procedures offer viable alternative. Phakic Intra ocular lens are another viable surgical procedure for correcting eyes. Instead of wearing a glass outside the eye, an implantable glass is inserted into the eye behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. It has been used extensively in Russia even before approving it in USA. Hence, it has long and reliable history of use.
