Egg Donation Process – Everything you needed to know
Posted: Aug 06, 2015
Before the egg donation cycle starts, the donor has to undergo a screening process. This screening process is conducted by egg donation centers and can be either carried out at a clinic mentioned by the prospective parents or at a clinic that is convenient to the egg donor. The egg donor has to be matched with probable parents. After the matching has been done, the following steps are involved when it comes to egg donation.
Here is how the screening is done:
- First and foremost, the donor’s ovaries are examined with the help of blood tests and/or physical pelvic exam to judge its ability to produce eggs. Sometimes, the donor might also be required to have a vaginal sonogram to understand the ovarian function and this usually happens during the second or the third day of menstruation. This procedure is known as fertility screening.
- Blood tests are also conducted to know the blood type and also to know about the general health of the egg donor as far as any infectious disease or drug use is concerned. Sometimes, the egg donor’s sexual partner is also asked to undergo various tests for STDS. Medical screening is a really important part of this procedure to ensure the health of the new one.
- Family history for possibility of genetic and hereditary diseases is also evaluated by genetic screening. Blood tests for genetic diseases like sickle-cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, thalassemia etc. are conducted under this.
- Sometimes the donor is also asked to sit for counseling sessions or just talk with the psychologists for a psychological screening. This is important as the donor needs to understand everything related to the risks and benefits of egg donation and to ensure that she understands all the implications of the same.
How does the process work?
In most of the egg donation Colorado centers and elsewhere, there is basic procedure that is followed and here in this article we have discussed that in brief.

- Vaginal sonogram is conducted after the 3rd week of the cycle. Self-injection is administered for 7-14 days to stimulate certain hormones
- To help grow the egg follicles, FSH is injected for 8-10 days in Colorado egg donation. Follicle growth is monitored in Denver egg donation clinics to ensure that it is in the right range.
- Screening for STD can be done before retrieval and HCG is injected before the retrieval of the egg
- Egg retrieval lasts for less than 30 minutes and the donor needs to rest unless the affect of anesthesia wears off.
- The donor can return to normal cycle after a day but too much of physical labor is not recommended.
In order to become an egg donor, one needs to visit egg donation Denver centers and undergo all these tests.
