Her acting career spans over four decades.

But Susan Sarandon was on hand to celebrate the works of her fellow thespians when she attended the opening night of the Broadway musical Hamilton as the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Thursday evening.

The 68-year-old star cut a sophisticated figure in a black midi dress which was emblazoned with a beige graphic and cut-out detailing.

The Thelma and Louise actress wore her luscious red locks in a curled style and injected a pop of colour with a glossy red lipstick.

She finished the look with black, studded ankle boots.

But the Academy Award winner wasn't the only star pulling out all of the stops on the Hamilton red carpet.

Elementary actress Lucy Liu also put on a glamorous display in a white lace dress, which she teamed with a tropical print jacket and nude stilettos.

Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker - who attended the opening alongside husband Matthew Broderick - made sure to stand out from the crowd in a floor-length teal gown which was coated with intricate embellishments.

Fashion maverick Anna Wintour also turned up to the event alongside iconic designer Marc Jacobs.

The Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue put on a typically sophisticated display in an ankle-length dress which was emblazoned with a blue and white floral print.

Marc looked equally dapper in a dark green suit which he wore with a graphic shirt and black leather sandals.

But despite the big names on the red carpet, Hamilton itself has been making waves in the entertainment industry - due to its groundbreaking mix of hip-hop, musical theatre and popular history.

The musical by composer, rapper and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton - one of George Washington's chief aids during the birth of the United States.

Hamilton, is the biographical story of one of the nation's most famous immigrants making his mark in the nation's history told through the medium of hip-hop - helping to draw direct parallels between the original migrant's struggle in the US compared to that of the modern day immigrant.
