Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic disorder that adversely affects the muscles by weakening the muscles that are involved in the movement of the body. In the disorder abnormal genes interfere in the process that is required for the synthesis of proteins required for the proper health of the muscles. During muscle dystrophy the muscles break down and are replaced by the fat deposits. Many times muscular dystrophy can be seen in the infant, but it is more prominent during the middle and later ages. Because MD is a genetic disorder people are born with the disorder and it is necessary to know that it is not contagious.

Symptoms

The symptoms of the muscular dystrophy include:

  • Development of scoliosis and the respiratory functions are reduced.

  • Most of the time symptoms usually appear in the male children of age below 6 years and can also appear infants.

  • Low endurance

  • Enlargement of calf and deltoid muscles.

  • Unable to climb the stairs.

  • Gower’s manoeuvre

  • Hips and knees get locked at 90 degrees coupled with turning of the feet downwards.

  • Degeneration and fibrosis of the ventricles.

Many genes are involved in the making of the proteins that are responsible to protect the muscle fibres from getting damaged and muscular dystrophy occurs when these genes are unable to perform their functions efficiently. Every form of muscular dystrophy is the result of genetic mutation and most of the mutations are inherited from the parents.

Diagnosis

Some of the methods that are highly efficient in diagnosing muscular dystrophy are:

  • Electrocardiography (ECG)

  • Electromyography (EMG)

  • Analysis of muscle biopsy by western blotting technique to see the abnormality in the size of dystrophin.

  • Creatine phosphokinase test (CPK)

  • Mutation analysis of DNA testing

  • Muscle charting to analysis the efficiency and activity of the muscles

Treatment

Physical therapy is very important to fight against the disorder as it helps to keep the joints loose and enhance their flexibility. Percutaneous tenotomies of knee flexors, Achilles tendon, iliotibial bands and hip flexors are also helpful in reducing the pain to some extent. Many times when the condition gets severe surgery can also be an option.

Proper knowledge is important! Many times people are deprived of the proper treatment facility because they don’t know where to look for such services. Clinicounselors can help you by providing all the information about the disorder and will also make sure that you are provided with appropriate treatment services that are according to your needs.
