A CAMPERVAN driver believed to have been on his way back from dropping off a wedding party was left with 'life-changing' injuries following a crash.

The 44-year-old, who had been driving a beige VW decorated with flowers and bunting, was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital after the collision near the Horton Inn in Cranborne Road, Wimborne.

Three fire crews were called to the scene as part of a bid to free the Wimborne man from the wreckage of the van, and he remained trapped in the vehicle for some time while crews worked carefully to free him without causing further injury.

The casualty was alone in the campervan at the time of the collision, but it is believed that he was returning from dropping off a wedding party when the crash took place.

A 54-year-old man from the Netherlands has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences as a result of the smash as is helping police with their enquiries.

Police closed the road between the Horton Inn and the Moor Crichel junction, as well as at the Thickthorn Crossroads, for much of the afternoon to allow an investigation into the crash to take place.

Officers were called at 12.24pm to reports of a two-vehicle collision.

The campervan and a blue heavy goods vehicle with a Netherlands number plate were involved.

Two men travelling in the second van sustained minor injuries, and were described by a spokesperson from the South Western Ambulance Service as "walking wounded".

A spokesperson for the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Verwood, Wimborne and Blandford attended, assisting the police and the ambulance service at the scene.

"Using two sets of hydraulic rescue equipment, firefighters removed the roof of the campervan to help extricate the casualty."

It is the latest in a spate of serious crashes in the area.

On Sunday, May 31, two-year-old Scarlett Knight from Wimborne was killed on a stretch of Cranborne Road around a mile from the Horton Inn.

She was one of three children and two adults travelling in a blue MG car when the vehicle left the road, collided with a wall and overturned.

Experienced motorcyclist Ivan Gordon Tomlinson died on May 21 2013 after misjudging an overtaking manoeuvre on a blind bend.

The 59-year-old was involved in a head-on collision with a white delivery van near the Horton Inn.

On Tuesday, June 11 2013, 23-year-old Sophie Crew died when her Mini Cooper was involved in a head-on crash with a coach transporting Queen Elizabeth's School students on the Cranborne Road.

Of the pupils travelling aboard the coach, 26 suffered injuries.

In November of that year, work to the minor roads crossing the busy Cranborne Road at the Horton Inn crossroads took place.

It included improvements to lining and signage with vehicle activated signing and an anti-skid surface being installed.

Carriageway resurfacing was also carried out on the Cranborne Road itself.
