When you're travelling alone, it is great to have the freedom of the open road, the ability to do what you want, when you want, and the opportunity to up sticks and move on when you like. However, one of things that will follow you wherever you go (and give you peace of mind and added security) is a decent single trip travel insurance policy. If you don't take one out you could be open to a memorable holiday experience for all the wrong reasons.

Ensuring you get the right policy is also important, as often you only know how truly good (or lacking) it is when you come to use it! For example, if you are in need of urgent medical medical assistance, suddenly being alone on holiday can be very lonely indeed.

Here are some tips to ensure your single trip travel insurance policy is as watertight as possible.

Items left unattendedIf you're travelling alone, the onus is on you to get everything right. Ensure that all your valuable items are protected by your single trip travel insurance, and be absolutely sure that cover extends even for items left unattended in airport holds or storage units if you have a long layover.

Extreme sportsWe've all been there: we get ahead of ourselves and become wrapped up in the moment, and suddenly we're on the end of a rope for a bungee jump, parasailing over a local resort or messing about on a water ski. But there will come a time during the experience, or indeed afterwards, when it passes through your mind: am I covered? Most likely, the experience will pass off incident, but never resort to the old cliché 'There but for the grace of God go I" - as it isn't God that hands out insurance cover.

Cover is keyIf you're wading through the sea of policies on offer, one of the things you need to ask your insurer is how much cover they will place on your valuable items. For example, if you are travelling with an expensive laptop, it's no good if the unthinkable happens and it's stolen and your cover is just 10 per cent of the true value.

Ask before you travelA good quality insurer will always be open to your questions and emails. It is a good idea to get those queries addressed before you find yourself on the other side of the planet. If you are travelling alone, your single trip travel insurance will need to be spot on. Hospital costsEven a simple, single policy can be quite handy when you're travelling for just one holiday, simply because of the fact that if you do find yourself in a hospital requiring treatment, the last cut is usually the deepest - meaning the hospital's medical bills. Check with your insurer what you are covered for and what are the limits.
