Consider Barging to See France

Author: Lisa Jeeves

Every year, thousands of tourists from all over the world visit France, many of whom want to see as much as they can of the country in a relatively short space of time. A common way to do it is by driving between hotels, spending a day or two in each place, or by towing a caravan. However, an increasing number of holidaymakers are now instead choosing to enjoy barge holidays in France. While some crew their own barge, it’s also possible to cruise aboard a "hotel barge", that is, a floating boutique hotel, often complete with its own housekeeping and chef. So, if you're still trying to decide on your mode of exploration, what’s the best way to see this lovely country?

Cost

Driving often works out less expensive, although the higher price of barge holidays in France is well worth the investment and reflects the comfort, luxury and overall experience of travelling on a comfortable vessel with an expert crew to take care of every aspect of your journey.

In fact, barge holidays in France actually still represent a smart fiscal choice; you’re getting a lot for your money, as your food, transport and accommodation are all included, not to mention the fact that your crew may often act as tour guides. The fact that a hotel barge represents one single expense, which is easy to keep track of, rather than a multitude of smaller, often unpredictable expenses, may appeal to travellers who like to know exactly what they’re dealing with in terms of expenditure.

Accessibility

It may seem obvious that barge holidays in France, by contrast, are restricted to canals, but a barge can bypass plenty of issues inherent to driving. For example, with a barge you’ll never have to worry about finding a hotel after a full day of travel, as you’ll always be guaranteed top quality accommodation. It’s also worth noting that any good barge cruise holiday will include outings to the most interesting sights along the way. Transport will be provided for these excursions, and you'll also have the opportunity to cycle alongside the barge or sit and relax above deck.

While cars and all but the largest caravans can go more or less anywhere in the country, you’ll always have to find accommodation (or places where you can legally stop the caravan). What’s more, during long journeys you’ll be confined to a cramped vehicle space, so the increased travel flexibility may not be worth it.

Comfort

There is no question that here a hotel barge wins hands down. A hotel barge is like a small boutique hotel, including a living area, sleeping areas, and often a sun-deck, which can even contain a pool. A well-equipped caravan can be quite comfortable, but only the very highest end caravans can begin to compare to a hotel barge for comfort.

A car, by contrast, is a notoriously uncomfortable way to spend a holiday. Whereas the various destinations may be pleasant and your accommodations may be comfortable, all the time spent travelling will also be time spent wishing you weren’t in a car!

Of course, the final decision of how best to travel and explore must come down to personal taste. Some holidaymakers love the independence of driving between hotels, while others enjoy the luxury of having all the travel details taken care of. It’s worth considering the above points, as the freedom offered by barge holidays in France may be a far more appealing option for a relaxing experience.
