Know about Universities in Kerala

Today, India envelopes a plethora of academic institutions – colleges and universities and is certainly one of the most acclaimed country when it comes to rating academic infrastructure worldwide.

At present there are more than 340 state universities in India, out of which Kerala boasts presence of 11 universities:

  • Kannur University
  • Kerala Agricultural University
  • Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies
  • Kerala University of Health Sciences
  • Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University

Calicut University is located in Malappuram district of Kerala. It is an affiliating university that has multiple off-campus centres which offer courses and conduct exams for students enrolled in the affiliated colleges. Varsity’s main campus has departments offering postgraduate courses and research programs in the field of science. In addition, it has been ranked as the 26th best university of India in 2013.

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), a public-owned autonomous university was founded in 1971. The varsity has three campuses – one in Kuttanad, Alappuzha and two in Cochin. It offers a wide range of courses at undergraduate, postgraduate as well as doctoral levels. About 2000 students enroll in one of the courses offered by the university every year. Furthermore, it is positioned at fifth number in the country as per Ranking of World Universities by Webometrics and at 1150 worldwide.

Kannur University was launched in 1996 with an aim to develop the scenario of higher education in Kannur and Wayanad districts of Kerala. The university was inaugurated on 2nd March, 1996 by Mr. EK Nayanar who was then Chief Minister of Kerala. It is a multi campus university with campuses at Kannur, Payyannur, Kasargod, Mananthavady, Thalassery and Kanhangad.

Kerala Agricultural University is imparts quality education needed for sustainable development of agriculture, especially in the state.

Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies was established by government of Kerala. The university has its headquarters in the premises of the College of Fisheries, Panangad. Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies is the first university in India that is exclusively devoted to studies in fisheries and similar disciplines.

Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) is a medical university situated in Thrissur, Kerala. The varsity was set up as per the Kerala University Health Act 2010. There are more than 200 colleges affiliated to the university.

Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University is located in Wayanad district of Kerala. It came into existence in 2010; with an objective of imparting education, research and extended services in the field of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.

Mahatma Gandhi University is approved by UGC and accredited (B+) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India (NAAC). The university has about 100 affiliated colleges spread across five districts in Kerala.

National University of Advanced Legal Studies, earlier known as National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies is located in Kochi. It offers undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate courses in legal education.

Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrith is a research centric Public University situated in Kalady near Kochi. The university is named after the philosopher Adi Sankaracharya and was set up in the year 1993.

University of Kerala formerly called the University of Travancore is an affiliating varsity established in 1937.
