Anesthesia: Medical Profession Beyond Pain Management
Thinking about surgery during 18th Century, especially through the lens of anesthesia, was frightening. Anesthesia when invented in the 1840s, some population criticized anesthesia as a "useless lavishness." Even in19th Century, nobles objected greatly to the use of anesthetics to minimize the pain during childbirth, as they described it to be a frustration of the Almighty’s designs.
With the advancement in the technology, Doctor Jobs in India has seen a steep transformation in their profession. When we hear about word pain, it sounds fearful and something not very pleasant. So, the profession of an Anesthesiologist is of utmost importance in the medical profession where he is always associated with pain management. Pain management plays a vital role in terms of treatment of a Patient. Anesthesia or anesthetics is a medication plan causing Patient to become unconscious so that he/she may feel no pain during surgery or post surgery.
Whether it is about pre operative counselling of a patient or peri-operative services or post operative pain management, the role of an Anesthesiologist is vital. An Anesthesiologist is not just involved in surgery only but in improving patient satisfaction also.
If we look on the general budget of an Indian Hospital, 60-70% of most Hospital budgets come from surgery department. And Anesthesiologist role is always required during and post surgery. Often treated as Patients advocate in operation room, Anesthesiologist keeps deep monitoring on Patient stability condition during procedure keeping surgeons update about problem if any aroused during surgery. Besides this, an Anesthesiologist provides pain management or relief to critically ill Patient during labor pain and delivery case.
When it comes to Anesthesia jobs in India, Anesthesiologist can groom their career in various disciplines of the field of anesthesia like: Anesthetic sub-specialties include cardiac and thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatrics, dental, maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, obstetrics, orthopedic surgery, and trauma & emergency surgery. Besides these, there are also two other sub-specialty areas Intensive care medicine and Pain management which describes complex work of an Anesthesiologist outside the operation theatre environment.
But, today Anesthesiology Jobs in medical profession is still on the sidelines of healthcare. The major challenge which is faced by majority of Anesthesiologist is to reduce the 30 day mortality rate among patients suffering from myocardial infarction, renal failure and stroke. So, simply spending time in the operation room, ICU, PACU, Pain relief clinic will not enhance the skills and caliber of an Anesthesiologist. But, it requires updating of knowledge and skills through regular attending CMEs, Medical Conferences and Seminars.
