The History of iPhone – An Insight

Apple's iPhone has come a long way since it was incepted on June 29, 2007. This smartphone wowed the world with its exemplary multi-touch capability, obsoleting all other smartphones that dominated the world. This revolutionary smartphone was born when Apple CEO, Steve Jobs came up with an idea of introducing a touchscreen based computer controlled by the device screen itself, and won't require a keyboard and a mouse. The idea was worked upon and iPhone was developed. Let's have a glance at the history of iPhone that will help you know about all the developments that took place after the first iPhone was released.

The iPhone 3G

Just after a year when the first iPhone was released on 2007 the iPhone's successor, called as the iPhone 3G was released on July 11, 2008. The new release had the same 2MP camera without video recording feature, and limited 128 mb eDram as the original. But several new features of iPhone 3G that is 3G data, Assisted GPS and more, resulted in a 1 million sales over the first weekend of the release. The iPhone 3G design was the biggest change compared to its predecessor. Apple redesigned the original plastic polycarbonate with metal buttons. Although, the front plate of the phone continued to be black, but with the introduction of 16gb model apart from black, iPhone was made available in white color as well. What's more? iPhone 3G was much cheaper and faster than its predecessor.

The iPhone 3GS

One more year passed, and iPhone 3GS was released on June 19, 2009. Though it sported the same design as iPhone 3G, but introduced many new features like 3MP camera with video support and voice control (a very early, yet basic precursor to Siri). The "S" in 3GS denoted speed, since the basic objective behind this upgrade was to provide users with a faster and more powerful device that would help perform the functions quickly and more effectively. iPhone OS 3.0 was introduced along with this release.

The iPhone 4

June 24, 2010 marked the release of iPhone 4, which was made available with a tagline "This Changes Everything, Again", and it really brought some major changes. iPhone 4 sported a completely new hardware design that was a lot thinner; it incorporated an uninsulated stainless steel frame along with a glass at the front and back.New features were introduced once again with iPhone 4 that consisted of upgraded 5MP camera and 720p HD recording capability. Moreover, it also featured a secondary front facing camera that was integrated to make video calls. It also brought in "retina display" while keeping the physical size and display resolution intact. Additionally, The iPhone 4 also introduced a new processor and Apple's A4 chip, along with iOS 4 (newer iOS version featured multitasking functionality and introduced Apple's new video chat service).

The iPhone 4S

In October, 2011 iPhone 4S was released. With iPhone 4S, the intelligent personal assistant, called Siri was incorporated in future generations of Apple mobile devices.It featured 8MP camera and Apple A5 chipset. It was released along with the fifth version release of the Apple iOS operating system, called iOS 5. Siri, better processing speed and new camera were some of major features of iPhone 4S, because of which iPhone 4S was highly acknowledged by Apple users.

The iPhone 5

After four years, iPhone 5 was released on September 21, 2012 and was touted to be the biggest change that has been made to iPhone. With iPhone 5 the fourth major redesign was introduced wherein the aluminum-based body was made even more thinner and lighter in comparison to the previous iPhone model. The iPhone5 featured LTE support, Apple A6 system-on-chip, a new compact dock connector and a lot more. It included the new Sony made 8MP Camera. It featured a 4-inch display which was larger than the iPhone 4 – 3.5-inch screen. On September 10, 2013 two new iPhone models of iPhone 5 were unveiled – the iPhone 5C and the iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 6

The new iPhone 6 is rumored to be released in September this year. The display is said to grow compared to iPhone 5 screen display which grew from 3.5 to 4 inches. It is expected to be made available in two screen size variants – 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch. Also, The iPhone 6 will have a durable sapphire display in some of the iPhone models.
