A Guide on Identifying Music on Your iPhone or iPad

Author: Paul Smith

It happens a lot of times when you hear a song somewhere and cannot figure out that the lyrics belong to which song. "What’s the song?" is the question you keep asking yourself all day long. Honestly, it is a bit annoying.

How about if your iPhone could hear a song and immediately tell you. Yes, you’re thinking it right! Also, the best part is not needing a third-party application to do the same for you. Instead, all you need to do is use the song identification tools built into your Apple device. One of the most popular apps purchased by Apple is ‘Shazam’ to help you out while having a hard time figuring out songs that you can’t seem to remember.

Using the music recognition feature, your iPhone listens to a song nearby using a microphone. The audio gets recorded and sent to a server for analysis. Further, the information is presented, matching the song in a database.

There are multiple ways to get to know about the song. Therefore, two methods are mentioned below. So, take a look!

Ask Siri About the Song

Asking Siri about the song is one of the simplest methods to know which song is playing. All you need to do is activate Siri and ask the question ‘What’s playing?’

Press and hold the power button of your iPhone to activate Siri and ask the question. On the other hand, if you use ‘Hey Siri’ to activate the same, you can do it as well.

Further, Siri will come up with a notification, for instance, ‘Let me listen.’ You need to make sure that the volume of the song is loud and clear so that your iPhone can listen to it properly. If you’re in a noisy surrounding, try bringing your phone closer to the sound.

Once your iPhone has listened to the song, it’ll flash its name.

Using the Shazam Control Center Button

If your iPhone or iPad is updated to the recent iOS 14.2 or iPadOS 14.2 versions, respectively, you can use the Control Center button to identify a song. Notably, the settings are not enabled by default.

To add the settings to your Control Center, follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Launch the ‘Settings’ app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Locate the ‘Control Center’ tab and click on the same.
  3. Tap on the ‘plus’ icon in front of the music recognition button.

Now, click on the Shazam icon in the control center to start identifying a song. Once you’re done with the process, a notification will pop-up, showing you the name of the song.

Did you ever think that you could identify a song with such easy methods? Now you no longer have to worry about a tune that gets stuck in your head. All you need to do is use the ‘music recognition’ tools to find a song.
