The railway ministry has decided to fasten up the Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai rail corridors to reduce travel time.

Subsequent to the triumphant commencement of Gatimaan Express, the Indian Railways has taken up a massive errand of decreasing the travel duration on the Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai trails by escalating the pace of trains up to 160 km per hour. The estimation of having this integrated would cost approximately Rs.10,000 crores. The Indian Railways had lately presented Gatimaan Express connecting Delhi and Agra at 160 km per hour speed.

"We have firmed up an action plan to increase the train speed to up to 160 km per hour on the total 9000-km main trunk routes across the country as part of the Mission Raftaar project. To begin with we have started the work on two major busy routes of Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah," a senior official from the Railway Ministry who is concerned with the venture explained.

Remodeling of the track, improvement of signaling arrangements and warding off susceptible sections all along the course are to be taken into consideration with high priority to make sure that the 160 km per hour speed on two of the busiest rail corridors in India are executed as per the preparations. at the same time, the Delhi-Howrah rail track is used by approximately 120 passenger trains and around 100 goods carrier trains on a daily basis, a number of traveler services and an identical figure of cargo trains too run on Delhi-Mumbai rail corridor every day.

As long as the price is taken into consideration, it is in process of being computed but it is probable to cost approximately Rs 10,000 crore for the two rail routes. "Once these two major routes are upgraded to 160 km per hour speed, there will be scope for launching more passenger trains in these sectors. This will reduce the waiting list of passengers in some of the popular trains as many more such services with similar facilities will be on the offer," a core official said.

The 1400-km-long Delhi-Howrah and the 1500-km-long Delhi-Mumbai corridors are in the midst of the two most important full of activity routes in the trade rich ‘Golden Quadrilateral’ of Indian Railways network. Additional routes in the current plan include Howrah-Chennai, Delhi-Chennai and Chennai-Mumbai. At present, Mail and Express rails that include Rajdhani and Shatabdi tracks can fasten up their pace to approximately 130 km on these two hectic routes.

"There are about 70 per cent of the total 2900-km-long routes of Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah which are compatible of running trains at a maximum speed of 130 km per hour. So we have to upgrade the rest 30 per cent route up to 160 km per hour speed," said an official who is deeply connected to the projects in hand.
