One of the most important senses that help in doing our day to day basic activities is the eyes. Without their proper function one can face a lot of hardships in life. Many people are involved in work situations that are hazardous for the human eye and some take it for granted, until it gets compromised through accident. With the undeniable importance of eyes to the human their optimum protection must be assured while being at the work site. People can easily stay away from harm’s way if they know about the equipment, its importance, and ways to use it and how it protects them?

Eye safety wear wasn’t always in use since past as it was during mid-1980s when construction companies and other factors slowly started realizing the safety related importance of these personal protective equipment (PPE). Nowadays construction workers and factory personnel can’t visit the site without wearing prescription safety glasses. Since that time, a lot of advancements have been made in eyewear design and functionality making these more comfortable and safe to wear.

Mechanism

Safety eyewear for industrial works is designed through shatter resistant lenses meant for protection of the human eye from outer elements like flying debris. Although the goggle lens might be composed of impact resistance materials, the factory testing standards require these to be available with minimum thickness regardless of the used material.

Safety eyewear that is meant for industrial use must match up with the ANSI Z87.1. performance standards. Prescriptions glasses meeting these standards need to go through a high-velocity object testing for their lenses and frames and meet other norms like side-shield protection, flammability, thickness of lens, corrosion and basic optical requirements as well. Safety glasses conforming to ANSI standards have a marking of Z87 at the inner area of frame temple bars.

Understanding Advancements in glasses

A lot of research has been done over the years for understanding why the employees don’t wear prescription safety glasses. A lot of research has been done for the same for driving improvements in online industrial safety equipment that would help for increasing the use of prescription safety glasses.

  1. Style/choice: The increase in the usage of safety eye wear depends a lot on the preferred style or letting the employees making choices for their eyewear design.
  1. Fitting and comfort: Safety glasses that are more comfortable and provide a good fit the wearer is known to be used more daily compared to the non-fitting and uncomfortable ones.
  1. Availability and accessibility of safety glasses: The usage of these eye safety wear equipment can be increased with the easy approachability and supply of glasses.
  2. Anti-fogging improvements: Using safety glasses that develop a fog layer in higher temperatures or at the time of intensive work situations is a major reason for their decreased usage. Anti-fog solutions/wipes and anti-fog glasses are known to provide significant improvements in performance leading to much better protection for the eye.

As there is still a room for lot of improvement for the prescription eyewear in industries, the awareness about proper usage of safety goggles can help coworkers as well as people around us.
