Drug and substance abuse is one of the most prevalent conditions in the world which is spreading by day. Of great concern is the rate at which youngsters are getting wrapped in it and its potentiality, to affect not only the drug addict himself but also his family, society, community and even the country he lives in as a whole. The cause of drug and alcohol abuse can be anything from mere peer pressure, idleness, to innocent parent negligence and to more serious psychological disturbances resulting from broken homes, abuse and child ill treatment. And what may start as an incidental one time indulgence, may graduate to an uncontrollable dependency ending up destroying a person, wrecking homes and a society as a whole.

Recovery from such an addiction can be quite difficult, time consuming and often challenge ridden. It requires more than effort, will and motivation to fully recover from drug and alcohol addiction; often counseling is required. For that reason therefore, it is important to know how to get a good counselor. A good drug and alcohol abuse counselorfor you should be;

  • Your confidante. One of the main purposes of getting a counselor is to guide and advice you. To do this, trust is very essential. You will need someone you can freely talk to about anything and someone you can trust even with your secrets.
  • Your friend. A choice to challenge your addiction is a very big one and often it comes with doubts and conflicts. As such, you will need someone close to talk to about your fears, anxieties and conflicts. A person who will listen to you unconditionally and without judging. A person who will hold your hand even when you backslide and pull you back to the right track. One who will not be afraid to criticize and challenge you when necessary.
  • Your motivation. When struggling with addiction, the last thing you need is a perfectionist but you need someone to look up to. Someone who will make you feel that you made the right decision to try and get your life back free of drugs or alcohol. A person who will be your encouragement even when you are at your worst.
  • Your strength. Drug and alcohol treatment is a process that takes time and effort. In fact, there is no magic nor is there a shortcut to drug and alcohol addiction recovery. It takes time before you can even start the actual recovery process. As such, you will need someone who will take your hand and pull you up on this long journey and that person has to be your counselor.
