Dentistry is not about teeth cleaning and teeth whitening. It is to enhance and beautify a smile by fixing oral hygiene problems and repairing damaged teeth using a large variety of techniques. The most common technique to repair a damaged tooth is filling which can be done by any dental clinic in a single appointment.

In that single appointment, dentist will do the proper checkup of the teeth and gums. When a cavity is discovered, the dentist will numb the area around the decayed tooth using an anesthetic and will remove all the decaying area on the tooth. He will also check the area to see if the decay is completely removed or not, to stop the spreading of the decay. When the decayed material is removed, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned to remove any bacteria or excess waste. If the tooth filling is near the root, dentist will put a liner made up of composite resin or other materials to protect the nerves of the tooth. After all this processes, filling of the tooth is done. The various types of materials to fill the missing teeth, broken teeth or teeth with cavity are:

Amalgam/ Silver: An Amalgam is the traditional method of filling. These kinds of fillings are made up of an alloy of mercury, silver, tin and copper. These are very robust and durable fillings but they are easily noticeable and not beneficiary to the health.

Gold: Gold filling is the most esteemed and durable filling as it is hard enough to chew food easily and moreover it lasts for 10 to 15 years but the problem with the gold filling is that it is very expensive and also requires more visits to the dentist as gold fillers are prepared in the lab and then attached to the tooth.

Composites: They are tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to restore the decayed teeth. Teeth that have suffered from damage can be easily restored by using composite filling as the color of composite materials is very easily matched to your teeth which means that the filling will blend with the teeth and will impossible to identify, which part of the tooth has filled.

Ceramic: Ceramic fillings are same as that of tooth color. Ceramic is mixed with metal is also used to increase its durability. Moreover, there is no allergic reaction due to this filling but the main disadvantage of this filling is its cost. It is more expensive than the amalgam and composite.

Among all these fillings, the tooth colored filling is the best as they are invisible and also maintain the natural look of the teeth.
