Exploring the Amazing Markets of Prague

People come to Prague for any number of reasons and this magical and intriguing city has so much to offer the discerning traveller. The Vibrant City Markets

Weekly markets have become very popular in the city, and selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to local handicrafts and clothes, they have evolved into an integral place in local life. The markets are also a great place to get some excellent street food, and the locals often gather for a catch up chat and to enjoy a delicious stand up snack.

The best time to visit the markets is usually in autumn, when the fresh produce on offer is in abundance and the weather is at its best for ambling around. The typical market place has also become somewhere that local musicians play and families gather on picnic tables to while away a morning.

Ji?ího z Pod?brad (Ji?ák)

This is a real 'down town' market, close to the metro station of the same name. Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, lots of stands squeeze tightly together and create a buzzing atmosphere of market traders and buyers. They often have themed days, with each one honouring a seasonal ingredient - such as the strawberry or the mushroom. There are some lovely coffee shops close by too, so you can really make a morning of it.

Náplavka

This is a lovely farmer’s market held every Saturday from 8am until 2pm. Many people come for the fabulous street food, live music and excellent DJs. The market is in a great location along the Vltava, and has become a favourite place among lovers of café and bar culture in the city.

Kula?ák

This market is perfect if you fancy picking up the makings of a picnic and hanging out for the afternoon on the grass or on the tables and benches. You can enjoy a cold beer or sample the local speciality - blackcurrant wine. You absolutely must sample the fois gras or one of the famous burgers, too. Live bands often perform in the area around this market, making the atmosphere fun and vibrant.

Nám?stí Republiky

This is the city's most central market, located on the square that borders the Old and New Towns. It's a lovely place for watching the world go by, and is definitely the place to go if you want to buy local crafts and marvel at a huge variety of ceramics. Baked delights and other fresh foods are also available in abundance.

Prague airport shuttles and buses from the airport may take you past one or more of these markets on your way into the city, so ask your driver to point them out so you can return on foot to explore.
