Yercaud is a quite, plantation covered place located deep into the Shevaroys hill range of the vast Eastern Ghats. It is a popular place in Tamil Nadu, just often referred as the Jewel of the South on account of its splendid forest resources, large coffee and tea estates, miles long land that are covered with lush English fruit plantations, and the temperate weather staying all round the year, thus making it an all-weather tourist destination. It is about 25 k.m. uphill from the city of Salem, which is also the headquarter of the district Yercaud is a part of. The popular ones include Bangalore (230 k.m.), Trichy (163 k.m.), Coimbatore (190 k.m.), Bangalore (222 k.m.), and Chennai (3258 k.m.).

The place derives its name based on the tranquil lake which is set in the midst of thick woods. It is based on this setting that the place was named so, as Yercaud signifies "Lake Forest". The place is one of the chief attractions of the region and is a most recognized for its beauty and solace. Tourist can enjoy boating on the cool clean water and spend some time relaxing at the banks. The place gets full with blooms in the May month when it becomes the venue of summer festival.

Lady Seat is yet another popular place of the town. It is a viewpoint housing a cluster of rocks and famous for offering panoramic views of the region. Visiting the place at night is highly advisable as the view of the light-studded twinkling town with a stark contrast of dark jungle and stars-lit sky looks amazing.

Tourists also flock in large counts to the Bear Cave. It is believed that the caves were once home of the bears which explains the name. Today it is a popular tourist spot in the region located in a private coffee estate close to the Norton Bungalow, which is the oldest bungalow in the place.
