If you're a keen snow sports enthusiast and you've been eyeing off those last minute ski deals on offer before the season starts, you might be thinking of investing in some new gear before you head off to the slopes. It is not, however, just the skis and snowboards that are important when considering new kit; the best clothing is also imperative if you're to get the most out of your experience.

Once you've made your selection from the range of last minute ski deals, take your time to research what kind of ski clothing you want to invest in. Whether you're a serious skier wanting top performance gear, or a recreational skier just searching for comfort and warmth, there are some key elements to bear in mind.

Fabrics

Peak Performance and Burton are two high-tech brands leading the market in ski gear. They both use the modern fabric called ‘Outlast’ for their base and middle layers, and both advocate that, as this fabric has been used by NASA astronauts as a temperature control fabric, it is perfect for wearing on the slopes. It keeps you warm but won’t let you get too hot.

When you're looking for your ‘outer layer’ jacket and trousers, you need to think about choosing stretchable, breathable fabric that offers protection against the wind and rain, as well as offering comfort and durability. And yes, it is possible to get all of these features in the same garment. High tech fabrics today also offer you the ‘four way stretch’, which helps you move freely when out on the slopes. Gore-Tex fabric is a common feature in ski gear, and some brands have even taken to using recycled plastic bottles in their fabrics in an attempt to promote sustainability.

Layering Up

The base layer of clothing sits next to your skin and draws moisture away, keeping you warm. You need synthetic materials rather than cotton for base layers.

The middle layer insulates and is normally made of a wicking fabric that provides warmth while letting moisture escape. Keeping this layer lightweight is a good idea, so choose a micro fleece. If your choice of last minute ski deals sees you travelling in spring, this middle layer may end up being the top layer, so you should choose something that is windproof too.

The outer layer is breathable but also waterproof. The perfect fabric needs to have tiny holes in it that let moisture out but don’t let any in. Seams need to be taped on these outer layers too.

Last minute ski deals are always a tempting and exciting prospect, but to make the most of your trip you need to make sure you have the right gear too. Start with your clothes and you are on the way to enjoying a great time on the slopes.
