Sleeping like a baby is the boon that a few of us get when we grow up, and also to retain it, an important part is played by the beds and mattresses that we sleep on. A restful slumber can turn into a nightmare if the basic step – the bed is not right!

While choosing a bed, do you really give a thought to some important aspects, which can also affect your health? Most of us don’t. But after reading this, the next time you choose a bed; it’s going to be a healthy decision!

Many of us don’t know that there are actually different kinds of beds like Divans, bedsteads, storage beds with headboards, guest/folding beds etc. The Divan is a space-saving bed with storage and acts as a base for mattresses; while the bedsteads give a contemporary or classic look and gives a more cushioned support. The headboards can be optional and they can be colour-coordinated with the room furniture while storage beds have the special feature of storage revealed by opening the top of the bed with an easy-to-operate mechanism. The guest or folding bed provides flexible solutions for overnight solutions and also saves space in small bedrooms.

It is advised that one should try out beds before ordering them online. One should try lying on the bed to see if it is too hard, too soft, or just about right. It is recommended that you try out all sleeping positions and take some time and lie down as you spend a third of your life in bed.

A bed is an important investment and a good bed is not necessarily expensive but it’s worth spending if you can afford to get a good mattress. The life-span of a bed is about 8-10 years and it should be changed then, else its deteriorating condition may also affect your health. It is strictly advised against buying old second-hand beds as its capacity to absorb sweat decreases with time and house dust mites accumulate in beds too. If you can afford, you should always go for a kingsize bed than a standard double bed, as it gives more room to relax and stretch out during sleep, especially for couples.

The ultimate tips for buying bed are that it should provide the right support custom to your body and it must adjust to your body shape and support your correct posture. The bed must allow for correct weight distribution and it must minimize partner disturbance. One should research before buying beds, about how it must eliminate high pressure spots and it must provide restorative sleep levels. The most important feature is that it should prove to be an investment and must cater to the body changing to last for a long time.

Besides the bed, there are also other things that should be kept in mind, like the ideal sleeping position where the spine is an S shape, the billiard table effect – wherein if the mattress is hard then it causes discomfort to the hips and shoulders and distortion of the back, and the hammock table effect – wherein a worn out, soft and sagging mattress with broken springs gives no support to the spine. One should also learn the correct way of getting out of the bed and making the bed in a proper way of positioning the pillows. After keeping all the things in mind, one can have a peaceful sleeping experience.
