The 6-lane Yamuna Expressway connecting Greater Noida with Agra was inaugurated in the year 2012. The INR 124 Billion project is unique expressway infrastructure that starts at Greater Noida and ends on National Highway 2 on Kuberpur.
Here are 7 astonishing facts about Yamuna Expressway that you did not know.
1: Completed before deadline
Scheduled to be completed in 2014, Yamuna Expressway was up and ready by August 9, 2012. It was inaugurated by UP Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav. The 6 high-speed lanes are extendable to 8-lanes. In addition to the express route, there are 13 service roads running parallel through the adjacent villages and towns.
2: Project idea dropped twice
The Yamuna Expressway took 5 years to move from paper to reality. The construction was scheduled to start in 2003 but got delayed till 2007 due to financial crisis. Implemented by the JayPee Group, the rigid concrete expressway has 7 Interchanges with 5 Main Toll Plazas. The two fall-outs proved to be the "stepping stone to success"
3: Indian Air Force Fighter plane makes a landing at the Expressway
For the first time in India, a fighter plane made a landing over a commercial track. The jet flew from the Gwalior Air base and made a hasty landing at the expressway which was audience to the event. A temporary ATC was set-up with bird-watchers in place. The expressway came to a halt for 4 hours.
4: Full-secured Expressway
It wouldn’t be wrong to call the Yamuna Expressway a digital infrastructure. It has close to 35 CCTV camera posts after every 5 kilometres. It has maximum and minimum speed trackers to guide the vehicles on the track. In a single day, it caters to over 100,000 vehicles. The cameras are monitored by the Vehicle traffic control that coordinates with Highway Patrol scouts.
5: Reach Taj Mahal in 90 minutes
Driving at 100-120 kmph, you can reach Taj Mahal in Agra from Delhi International Aiport in 90 minutes flat. The right lane is reserved for overtaking at high speeds. Heavy vehicles are escorted out of expressway if they breach the speed limit of 60 kilometres per hour. There are SOS tool booths throughout the track to make emergency calls.
6: Runs through close to 350 villages
Expect a decent appreciation in the property rates once the real estate market catches up along the 16445 km track. There are close to 334 villages and towns located along the Yamuna Expressway like Gautam Budh Nagar, Bulandshahar, Aligarh, Mahamaya Nagar (Hatras), Mathura and Agra that have been identified as potential Tier II towns in the future. So, it is one of best place in Delhi-NCR to buy a plot in Yamuna Expressway.
Fact 7: No fare on National Holidays
The track crosses the Jaypee's Sports City in Greater Noida and the Buddh Circuit Formula One track on national holidays like Independence and Republic Day, the tolls fares are pardoned off. Adjacent sites have become popular camping and picnic destinations for regular travellers with great food outlets and resting lodges.
