I drove to the high school one afternoon to pick up my teenaged children. There was a car next to me blaring strange music out of their speakers. I think they deliberately had their windows down. My teenaged children walked to the car and I asked them what that noise was. They rolled their eyes because they think I’m old and don’t know anything. They said that all of their friends are listening to it. I informed that the fact that their friends listen to it means nothing to me and that I want to know what it is. Finally, I insist that they tell me and when they do I have no idea what they are talking about, so I go online to check out Yemi Alade songs and videos for myself.

It is not a hard assumption to make that I have never heard of Yemi Alade before. I was surprised to find out that she is a singer and song writer from Nigeria. She was exposed to music as a child and has been performing most of her life. I wonder how these teenagers find this music. You can definitely hear the African beat in her music. She adds a pop-like sound with R&B, to the beat and it makes for a fun dancing rhythm. Yemi Alade has performed songs titled, "Fimisile," "Bamboo," and "Johnny."

I need to be able to see what the teens are listening to so I click on a website where you can watch Yemi Alade music videos. I start the video and begin watching what my teenagers say all of the kids are listening to. It seems as though the videos are creative and showcase the singer’s talents. Yemi Alade is a talented singer and I can see why my teenagers and their friends are listening to her music.

If you are interested in listening to something that your teenagers are listening to then you should check out Yemi Alade music, songs and videos. They can all be found online. This talented female Nigerian singer songwriter mixes together a little R&B with pop and an African specific beat. If it weren’t for those teenagers blaring their music in the school parking lot, I would have never known about Yemi Alade music.

This is a new genre of Nigerian music that has gotten the attention of teen children in my community. I’m happy that I’m not as crazy as my children think I am, and therefore was able to get a sample of a new generation of music. The combination from the different styles of music categories makes for a fresh and fascinating sound. I’m sure that we will listen more Yemi Alade songs online and her distinctive sound in the future.
