The main difference between peanuts and nuts and peanuts is that peanuts grow underground whereas nuts grow on trees. Nuts e.g pecans are also called tree nuts and peanuts are also called legumes.

According to botany- the study of plants, a nut is a shell-covered fruit of a tree or plant. The inner part of the nut in the hard shell is referred to as the kernel which is edible.

Nuts are one seeded but there are also nuts that have two seeds and hard. Nuts would never split open so as to scatter all its seeds when they are matured. On the other hand, peanut pods usually have multiple seeds that are found in a single legume.

Peanuts can easily split open so as to scatter its seeds when they are matured. Legumes are dehiscent whereas nuts are indehiscent.

The other major difference between the nuts and seeds is that pecan nuts are not attached to the ovary wall whereas legumes have multiple seeds that are attached to the ovary walls on their pods. In this angle of view, it is very unclear whether peanuts are a legume or a nut because the pods of the peanut is dehiscent but the seed is not at all attached to the ovary walls which are quite similar to the nuts.

Peanuts identity has always remained in a mystery/crisis whether it is really a nut or a legume. It is apparent in the name, however, peanuts are legumes.

Peanuts are usually used for crop rotations as they can replenish and replace nitrogen that is in the soil. Unlike the tree nuts, peanuts usually grow underground just like crops such as potatoes. A majority of the nuts such as pecans, walnuts or almonds have a lower quantity of saturated fats as compared to the peanuts. Nuts do provide a good deal of proteins and thus they become an excellent fuel source because of the unmodified fats. Nuts provide protection against cardiovascular deterioration and regularize blood lipids.

There are many of varieties of peanuts such as Virginia peanuts or Spanish peanuts. Peanuts have more bioflavonoid as compared to nuts. They are also very rich with vitamins and many other important nutrients for good health. Tree nuts are also available in many varieties such as cashews, hickory, hazel nuts, almonds, pecans, walnuts etcetera.

Another major difference between the peanuts and the tree nuts is that both of them have different compositions. They also have fundamental biological differences which cause the nuts and legumes to be labeled as separate. Peanuts are usually grown as yearly crops in various parts of the world such as China, India, and in the tropical regions of Africa.
