Have you ever thought of visiting Goa during the carnivals? Visit the state during the dashing and electrifying Goa Carnival. The word "Carnival" was derived from a Latin word which means 'to throw away the meat'. So, the dwellers avoid meat eating. This Carnival is celebrated wholeheartedly and the people from all parts of the state participate. It is a grand celebration with music, songs, processions and floats. The state celebrates this colourful festival with full energy. Goa Carnival is a merry blend of Indian and Portuguese culture. Goa Carnival is held during mid-February and continues for 3-4 days. The legendary King Momo inaugurates the carnival and it was started around the 18th century. Well, Shigmo is another well-known festival of the state. It is a Hindu celebration and it is basically the Holi celebration. Holi in India is celebrated in different parts of the country with different names, here it is Shigmo. Shigmo is celebrated with elaborate parades in Panaji, Mapusa, Vasco, Pondo, Margao, but the Parade in Panaji is the main attraction. This festival is an extraordinary display of Goan Hindu culture. In the month of March, on the 9th moon day it begins and it is held till full moon day. With beautiful dance and enchanting music, the performers create an attracting event.
