Does Your En-Suite Bathroom Stand Out From The Crowd?

En-suite bathrooms mean different things to different people – if you have young children it is almost certainly a sanctuary for a few minutes peace every day and an escape from all the kiddie clutter. If you regularly have guests to stay overnight it allows everyone some privacy so no wonder they are so popular; most people are willing to sacrifice space in the family bathroom to gain an extra bathroom or shower room. That also means en-suite bathrooms are usually pretty small but that doesn't mean they can't still be designed to impress – even if it is only you who uses it regularly.

So just how can you make your en-suite bathroom that extra bit special?

Here are some ideas for injecting some style into that small space:

  • Buy a designer sink – gone are the days when the sink had to match the other sanitaryware – you can now choose from stone, glass even copper in a range of shapes and sizes. Check them out in real shops too – the best deals are not always online and you get to touch the actual item before your buy (how radical!) and even get some good advice from real salespeople.
  • Install a statement bath – if you have the space go for a roll-top bath or an organically shaped free-standing stone bath. There's nothing like an opulent bath to set the tone of your bathroom and to create a relaxing place in which to unwind after a long day.
  • Ditch the standard bath – if you don't have room for a really special bath then forget it altogether – chances are you have a bath in the family bathroom for the occasions when you have the time to relax and most people tend to prefer showers to baths on a regular basis. In the space of a standard bath you can fit a generous luxury shower.
  • Splash out on a great lighting scheme – use wall lights at the sides of the mirror rather than above it for a more flattering light and have mood lighting that can be switched on separately from the main lighting so you have the option to create a more relaxing space.
  • Use beautiful accessories – the mirror, light fittings, towel rails, towels and toiletries should all be chosen carefully to enhance the room. Use them to reinforce your chosen style of bathroom – contemporary accessories for a contemporary en-suite and traditional-style (or even reclaimed or antique items) for a more traditional bathroom. Add a splash of colour with the towels if you feel inclined or simply go for plush white.
  • Focus on the tiles – the colour, texture and size of the tiles you choose will affect the end-result of your ensuite shower room or bathroom significantly, as will the quality of the tiles themselves and the tiler's workmanship, which is what makes
designer tiles such a good choice for their high quality of design and finish. Very large porcelain tiles will instantly make a bathroom appear more contemporary but you might have to balance this with practicality if your en-suite is very small. Wall tiles can also be used to add a splash of colour with a mosaic border or vertical panel, for instance.
