When you visit Rome, your first thought may not be making a trip to the beach. After all, Rome is one of the greatest cities in the world, packed full of world-class attractions that would take weeks to see even if you did nothing else. But actually, Rome has some excellent beaches nearby that are well worth making the effort to see during your time in the city.

If you fancy an afternoon on the beach after all your sightseeing, here are a few of the best to visit. Settle in to your accommodation after arriving on your Fiumicino airport transfers, then get ready for some fun in the sun.

1. Anzio

Anzio is a town about an hour to the south of Rome and it's as easy to get there as the Fiumicino airport transfers are! There are some very clean Blue Flag beaches here, and the sand is soft, golden and inviting. Interestingly, it was the place where the Allied forces landed in 1944. Nettuno is another town a bit further on that also has some good beaches, so consider taking a day trip there too.

2. Sperlonga

Sperlonga is a beautiful town full of whitewashed buildings, and it is worth the trip for that alone. However, it is also home to a stunning beach complete with soft sand and great views. It's also a Blue Flag beach so you know it's going to be clean and safe. It takes just over an hour to get here from Rome on the train. Your Fiumicino airport transfers driver can point out the station in Rome so you'll have no trouble arranging a day trip.

3. Sabaudia

This is another Blue Flag beach that has a free area as well as a private one. It's secluded and tends to be less crowded than the other beaches on the list, which is partly due to the fact that it is harder to get to. You will need to get a train and a bus if you don't have a car, and the journey takes about 90 minutes in all.

4. Fregene

This is a lively beach about 20 miles to the north of Rome, and people often travel here for the excellent nightlife; you can spend the day on the beach and then enjoy the night as well. You can get a train from Termini station and then a bus, which takes just under an hour. All in all, it's one of the best day trips for visitors and you should arrange to do it before your return Fiumicino airport transfers.

5. Santa Marinella

This beautiful beach is very easy to get to as it is just under an hour away from Rome by train. It can get a bit crowded at weekends, but it's well worth the effort. There are also some excellent restaurants to visit during your stay.

Chill Out on the Beach when You Visit Rome

Rome may boast some of the best historic attractions found anywhere in Europe (and the world), but that doesn't mean you want to spend your entire holiday sightseeing. If you want to enjoy a bit of time to chill out, make sure you catch a train out of the city and spend the day relaxing on one of the excellent beaches listed above. All of them are an easy day trip from the city, and you'll be back in time to head out and enjoy the nightlife of Rome when you get back.
