Globally there has been an increase in the number of tea drinkers today. With the increasing numbers of premium chai lattes, Investment depends on trends and forecast. And, investors are looking out for these trends and forecasts.

Getting over coffee

Levels of caffeine in beverages have caused people to move from coffee to tea. Now there is almost 50 percent growth in the tea industry. Coffee has been presented a favourite beverage and it has not been obliterated from the market. However, increased health awareness and advice by health experts have caused a serious shift in the weights favouring tea whereas the need for creative and wide varieties of taste, the tea lattes have evolved.

The trends between the ‘bigs’ in tea

When one uses the term ‘chai tea latte’, it is easily assumed as milk chai in the UK as it is assumed as masala chai in the US. The milk chai and masala chai are the two bigs in the tea market. The word ‘masala’ comes from India and refers to spiced chai which is the only type of chai that is popularly drunk in the US. The trend in the UK is not so much in favour of masala chai. Over 90 percent of tea drinkers in the UK drink black chai with milk and do not prefer the sweet spices from India. Therefore, the trends in the UK tea industry are more in favour of milk chai while it is the other way around for the US.

Country trends

The tea drinking population in the US has been growing from the 1990s. While tea originated from countries like China, India, Nepal, Srilanka and Kenya, it is yet to flourish in the markets in Europe. Countries like Singapore and Malaysia who also drink more coffee than chai are slowly warming up to the introduction of chai in the markets. Various tea sellers therefore are trying to sell a smoky and brown version of chai which is closer to the stimulant coffee. Australia is also becoming a growing tea market today.

Favours in flavours!

The new trends in the Premium chai latte seems to lie in two main kinds which are fruit flavours and flower flavours. With increased health conscious numbers, fruit has replaced sugar. Therefore, tea with fruit is slowly building in the market. Pomegranate and orange are some popular flavours. Flowers too are being added to tea to bring out interesting flavours. Jasmine and Hibiscus tea are popular amongst these and are found mostly in green and white tea.

A steady growth…

As the tea industry is growing, so is the varying preferences for tea. As black tea with milk was the most preferred, now green tea is slowly gaining favour in the market because of its health benefits that associates it. Also, readymade teas in bags are also big in demand for today’s fast paced life. Tea bags with different flavours are another trend in the world.
