The nearest railway station to Dharamshala is Pathankot. From there a bus or cab can be taken to reach Dharamshala. If flying, then the nearest airport is Gaggal Airport.

Home of the Dalai Lama, Dharamshala is one such spot in Himachal Pradesh which is a brilliant blend of the old and contemporary cultures. The town is majorly inhabited by the Tibetan community, and therefore, the majority of shops and hotels in Dharamshala are owned by Tibetans. So do not be surprised if the this quaint town doesn’t seem to be as desi as its name.

One should know that there aren’t many fancy and luxury spa resorts or hotels in dharamshala to spend a snazzy weekend up in the hills, unlike its distant cousins Shimla and Manali. The town has amazing options for solo travellers, backpackers, or hikers, who are just in the mood for some rejuvenation or wish to get closer to their inner self at the monasteries where the teachings of the Dalai Lama echo far and wide. To be crisp, Dharamshala isn’t a suggested option to spend a luxurious holiday in Himalayas.

Some of the most frequented and sought after spots in Dharamshala are:

  1. Kangra Fort - hikers’ favourite, the Kangra Fort is one of the oldest forts in India and is the largest in the Himalayas. The fort was built by the royal family of Kangra. For shutterbugs, the fort offers exotic views of the Banganga and Manjhi rivers.

  1. Bhagsunag Falls - also known as the Bhagsu Falls, this site is more famous for the Bhagsunath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The gushing water of the waterfalls cascading down into the pool makes for an amazing diving point. Nature’s very own jacuzzi!

  1. Dal Lake - go paddling in the gorgeous lake which is situated in the deodar forests at an altitude of 1,775 metres. Boating in this lake is sheer bliss, ideal for couples.

  1. The Dalai Lama Temple Complex - from the name itself, one can get an idea of the peace and tranquility that this place exudes. The temple complex has a distinct aura which calms the mind and soul immediately and is one of the must visit places to visit in Dharamshala. Visit this temple for the beautiful architecture and to practice some inner healing.

The best time to visit Dharamshala is from March to mid July, and from mid September to November. If snow is what attracts you, then the very obvious months of December to February are ideal.
