There are few experiences more special than seeing a big cat in its natural habitat. If you are an avid wildlife enthusiast, a trip to see Tigers in the wild is bound to be high on your list of adventures. India is home to many reserves that offer opportunities for some wonderful Tiger tours. Whether you want to combine these Tiger tours with a cultural holiday, or simply focus on the spotting the animal itself, there will be an itinerary for you.

Fast Facts

Before you head off on one of the many wonderful wildlife excursions, make sure you have done your research so you know a little more about the species you are going to encounter. The Tiger is the largest member of the cat family and one of the most elusive. Their distinctive white bellies and long striped tails are their most distinguishing features but there is no mistaking them. When you come across one of these magnificent creatures in the wild, there will be no disputing its identity.

The animals are recognised as an endangered species - many of the subspecies are no longer - but with their plight becoming an increasing concern of many conservation groups, much is being done to reverse the trend of decreasing numbers in the population. One hundred years ago, the number roaming free was estimated at a hundred thousand, but today it has dwindled to just four thousand.

India has several reserves, mainly in the northern part of the country, dedicated to protecting the animal and its habitat. Much is being done to educate the local population and preserve the environment in which they thrive. Tiger tours are run from the main reserves in an effort to raise awareness and generate the funding to maintain the necessary conservation efforts required to protect the habitat.

These big cats are very adaptable and can survive in a variety of habitats, from mangrove swamps to tropical forests, and woodlands to savannah grasslands. They are elusive mainly because they prefer to hunt at night when they have more chance of securing prey, although they will take the opportunity to make a kill whenever one presents itself. Great swimmers and excellent climbers, they should fear nothing, but they can do little to fight the encroachment of human development and modernisation.

Feeding mainly on Sambar Deer, Wild Pigs, and Antelope, they will also hunt Sloth Bear, Crocodile and Snake, should the need arise. When on Tiger tours in India you are likely to encounter all of these animal species and more, and, although the big cat is the indisputable highlight, there is much more to discover.

Tiger tours in India are becoming increasingly popular and with excellent travel companies offering an array of options, there are plenty to choose from. Accommodation in the reserves is basic but comfortable and an experienced naturalist guide is on hand to help you make the most of your experience in the Indian jungle.
