Posted: Dec 03, 2015
If you plan to visit Peru, you probably haven’t given much thought to Lima. Most people are more interested in the magnificent Incan trail. Nothing wrong with that; the Incan trail is an experience of a lifetime! But Lima is also worth exploring. If you plan to briefly stop over and stay at a luxury hotel in Limabefore continuing, you might just want to rethink that decision. Here’s a list of places that you must visit while you’re in Lima.
1 – The Plaza Mayor
While the region where the city is located has been occupied for over a couple of thousand years, it was officially founded by Francisco Pizarro back is 1535 at the spot where the Plaza Mayor stands today. This site is located right in the middle of Lima’s historical district and is a major tourist attraction. There’s also an old Cathedral that was originally built in 1564 but an earthquake destroyed it in 1622. It was rebuilt in 1763 and is a beautiful building to explore. The historical district is just a few miles from any luxury hotel in Lima.
2 – Museo de la Nacion
The National Museum might not be an impressive building to look at, but it houses a number of treasures to explore. The three floors contain several artefacts from the pre-Columbian cultures, and allows you a glimpse of the ancient history of this city. The exhibits also include scale models of Incan structures around Cusco. There are several Columbian and Incan artefacts here as well. The museum isn’t far from any luxury hotel in Lima; so you can easily visit in one afternoon and gain a deeper understanding of the culture.
3 – Miraflores
The Miraflores district is one of the most popular places to visit. It has several Cliffside gardens that you can walk in. Most tourists visit the parks to look at the various modern sculptures there. If you feel a little more adventurous, you can also paraglide or observe para-gliders. There are many who paraglide off the cliffs and ride the ocean winds.
4 - Church and Convent of San Francisco
This is one of those rare buildings that survived the earthquakes of 1687 and 1746. The church was consecrated in 1673 and still sees worship. However, the most interesting part of the Church is the catacombs under it. They are open to visitors but they’re definitely not for the faint hearted. It you don’t mind moving away from the comforts of your luxury hotel in Lima to walk through old, scary catacombs, this is definitely a place to visit.
