Sales of medium cars are fast overtaking their larger counterparts. As large class vehicles lose out to the midsize segment, manufacturers are offering more choice. Although Mazda leads the pack, both Honda and Hyundai are hot on its heels. So which is the best option for you?

Value:

The new Honda Accord price is only slightly more than the Hyundai i40 Active with the Mazda6 being the most expensive of the three. However, the larger price tag does not necessarily mean that the Mazda offers the best value. Each of the models has their own particular highlights in their standard equipment. For example, the i40 has nine airbags and parking sensors on the front and rear. However, the Honda has 17-inch alloys, dual zone climate control and six-CD audio system as standard The Mazda6 includes a reverse camera and sat nav.

Long Term Costs:

Of course, the initial price is not the only consideration in whether to buy Honda Accord, Mazda6 or Hyundai i40 variants. There is also the long-term costs such as servicing to consider. All three offer fixed price servicing but the i40 package appears to be the cheaper of the three. Fuel economy is also a major consideration. Based on a combined cycle, the claimed 7.5 litres per 100 kilometre Hyundai consumption is under dispute as road tests have it nearer to 11.5 litres. This is more than the Mazda6, which offered just under 11 litres and far higher than the 8.5 litres offered with the Accord.

The Mazda6 features a four cylinder 2.5-litre engine that offers 138 kW of power, which feels smooth whether you are driving around town or on the open road when paired with the six-speed automatic. The Honda features a slightly smaller engine at 2.4 litres but it can offer 148 kW of power. This extra power is needed as the model is heavier than its counterparts, but it can still deliver a solid and performance in almost every driving situation. The Hyundai has the smallest engine in this group with a 2.0 litre, which offers 131 kW of power, which almost matches the Mazda. Although the i40 is also the lightest vehicle of the bunch, it lacks punch and feels slow in the low rev range.

Cabin:

The size of the cabin is pretty similar throughout the three options. However, the i40 does fall down with lower quality touches such as imitation leather features and unlined storage spots. The Honda Accord sets a high standard in cabin interiors. The front seats offer excellent support and deliver a great drive experience with all controls in just the right spot. There are also lots of storage options to ensure that the cabin does not feel cluttered. Unfortunately, the Mazda cabin does feel smaller and more cramped. The 6 has the smallest boot of the three and the smaller opening and high loading lip make this even more impractical. The interior touches are decent quality but the touchscreen interface lacks finesse.

While all three of these options offers a great choice, the Honda does offer driving panache and spacious cabin to deliver a great total package.
