Size 10 Bryce Dallas Howard had to buy herself another red carpet dress
Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard won over the red carpet at the Golden Globes earlier this month when she revealed she had bought her Jenny Packham gown herself at a department store. As a size 6 (UK size 10), she revealed that she can’t borrow gowns from designers as easily as other size 0 or size 2 actresses.
Last night at the Critics' Choice Awards Bryce once again went without a Hollywood stylist and bought her own Balmain gown online, taking advantage of the wonders of next-day delivery.
She bought her black Balmain gown with a plunging neckline and silver star detailing on the hip from Elyse Walker for £909.79 - a good price if you consider that a top red carpet stylist can charge around £1,500 a day for their services. She paired it with t-bar peep-toe black heels and an Edie Parker black box 'Fiona' clutch with pearl detailing.
Dallas Howard explained why she often buys her own gowns on the Critics Choice Awards red carpet: 'I’ve alluded to this a little bit before, but when you’re not a sample size or if you don’t have a direct relationship with a designer or if you don’t have a lot of notice - those size six dresses aren’t available.’
She added: ‘'What I’ve found is, if something is last minute, I go to Neimans or I get something online... I’m really taped and I’m touching my breasts a lot, making sure that the tape is still sticking. I hope it’s not awkward for anyone.'
While buying your own awards season gown might seem like an alien concept to many, Bryce laughed off the suggestion that she was amazing for wearing off-the-rack. She said to E!: ‘No I’m not amazing, these are expensive dresses!’ I think it would have been better if it wasn’t a typical fancy dress. The people I’m so obsessed by are able to go to a store and get something vintage that’s under $7 and they make this beautiful gown – I’m not that person.’
Celebrity stylist Manny, who works with Jourdan Dunn and Lottie Moss, talked The Telegraph through the reality of red carpet sample sizes: ‘In Paris generally sample size is a 6-8 [UK size] and if you are busty it’s near impossible to fit into a sample. For celebrities larger than a sample size often a brand would let you pull from store stock, but then it means you can’t make alterations as it needs to go back. I respect Dallas for buying her gowns, but it’s often a massive investment to make on a dress which sometimes is so associated with that particular event that you might not get to wear it again.’
