Choose Uganda and Rwanda for a World Class Gorilla Trekking Experience
Posted: Feb 08, 2016
Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime holidaying experience like no other that everyone should try at least once in their lives. Mountain gorillas can be found in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo although Uganda and Rwanda stand out as the two countries with the best developed trekking experience. Gorilla trekking is also called gorilla tracking.
A sizeable population of mountain gorillas can be found in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, making the forest the perfect back-drop for a gorilla safaris Uganda. The other side of the border in Rwanda is home to 10 habituated groups of mountain gorillas which is the largest anywhere in the world.
What sets gorilla trekking apart from other types of wildlife tours is the close vicinity in which the tourist finds himself with the gorillas. The physical appearance and many mannerisms of gorillas are very similar to humans making this experience that much more unique and exciting.
What is Gorilla Trekking Really Like?
Tourists are required to purchase gorilla tracking permits for Uganda safaris. The same applies to Rwanda. These permits can be purchased through your tour company. Prices vary depending on the country so it is a good idea to talk to the tour operator about permit costs before planning your trip. There are a maximum number of permits issued per day so make arrangements well in advance.
Gorilla tracking can be done through out the year although some months offer a better overall experience than others. June to September and December to February are relatively drier months in both Rwanda and Uganda making this the best time to go gorilla trekking. Although the months of February, March, April and May mark the long rains, gorillas are easier to spot because they prefer the lower slopes where food is in plenty and the cold is not as harsh.
Things to pack on the trek include hiking boots, garden gloves, rain jacket, long sleeved blouse or shirt, energy snacks, sun glasses, hat, camera and binoculars. Although you do not need to be in the best physical shape to go gorilla trekking, you will need to be in reasonable shape because the trek can take anywhere from half an hour to eight hours.
Booking with the Best Tour Company
There are many Uganda and Rwanda gorilla tours companies but unfortunately not all offer the best trekking experience. Gorilla trekking is only as good as the company that offers it making choosing the right company to handle every detail of your tour extremely important. Fortunately, reputable companies offers guided gorilla tours and handle every part of your trip to make the experience as stress-free as possible.
